I am trying to find out if I can overclock my Dell XPS 410's CPU. Here are the specs for motherboard and processor: Model - 0WG855 | Chipset - Intel P965/G965 | Cpu - Intel Core 2 duo E6600 @ 2.4ghz | Socket - LGA 775. I have heard that Dell locks the bios... If anyone can shed some light on the subject I would really appreciate it.

Most likely it's locked. And since it's using p965/g965 chipset, even if it's not locked, it won't oc by any noticable amount. It'd be like trying to make a lawn mower run at 100mph - not going to happen. :na:

the BIOS is locked on their lower end XPS system. you should have build your own or pay them more. because nwo they locked it people cant exactly extract more performance without spending more money like mobo to get a unlocked BIOS.

I appreciate the help. Yeah I wish I would have built my own, at the time their financing was too good to pass up and I was in the process of moving so I didn't have cash immediately. Oh well, I will have to upgrade at some point now that I have it paid off.

its your lesson there!:P

i only bought one OEM PC, well actually my dad gifted to me. after that i never buy a OEM again. its all restricted and "cant" upgrade anything worthwhile.

They wanted you to buy a new one instead of upgrading. :D

Well I have a Dell Dimension 9200 (XPS 410) with a C2D E6300 at stock 1.87GHz, using the guide here: http://www.starless.nl/overclock.html I managed to overclock it to 2.2GHz, and it was very easy to do.

Note, I accept no responsability for what happens to your computer :D

As everyone said, you won't be able to overclock that one.

Unlike what they seem to be implying though, Dell actually allows overclocking on some fairly cheap systems. Any in the XPS gaming line (including the XPS 630, which starts at $1100 or so) allow full unlocked functionality for clock and voltage (plus it uses completely standard components, so it is completely upgradeable).

Could I overclock if I replaced the motherboard?? I got a xps410 so is that even smart? I don't have warranty anymore and I am a very noobish when it comes to computers. The only thing I have ever installed is the 8600GT video card and I know I can do ram and I think I can do a processor which I think I am getting a E8500 core 2 duo.

I got an easy, stable overclock of 2.4Ghz on my stock E6400 Dimension 9200 still using my Dell mobo by increasing my fsb to 300Mhz! It can go higher too! My mobo is the Dell DXP061 0WG855, so it can be done, Happy Days!!

Guys, I need a link for ClockGen Because non of the Chips are showing up. At least the one they show. My numbers match. I think I just have the wrong clockgen program.

Try SetFsb, Clockgen and other such software based programs.

99% sure this will void the warranty.

I am a somewhat noob at this. I really don't want to overclock my FSB really. I just did that and I got my CPU up to 2.6. LOL My computer crashed and then BSOD so I tuned it back to default. I really want to to overclock my CPU but this site everyone is saying to go to, the clockgen program doesn't have my PLL as the tutorial says. I don't care about my warranty because my warranty is alreayd up.

the only reason i think people should buy OEM's is if
1: They are too lazy or stupid to build their own
2: if they want a warranty.

one question though: why would you want a warranty?
