Forum CPU & Components : Other Components - Wierd problem
Ok yesterday im in my little brothers room he has a dimension e310 bone stock integrated everything 2.8ghz p4 blah blah blah anyway i go to turn it on it goes through the bios and the post normally then as the windows boot screen comes up the fan spins up REALLY fast even though the processor isnt getting hot, then before the welcome screen comes up it shuts down abruptly and the power button blinks orange and after that it wont turn on or nothing can somebody tell me why
Could be either the PSU or hdd. I'd start by running the diagnostic/repair software from the hdd mfg website off a floppy. If the hdd is OK, I'd try another PSU
i tested the hard drive
If the hdd checked out, I'd try a different PSU. Some mfg do, or at least did, strange things with the wiring and so you had to use specific PSUs but don't know if this if the case for that machine
can it be higher wattage or does it have to be the same because i have a 400 watt psu ans if i can use it for this i dont have to buy another
You can use a higher wattage. In the past with some machines it had to do with the wiring of the mobo. Be safest to test it with another Dell PSU. This is why it's best to build or buy from a company that doesn't get into this proprietary crap.
yea thats why all of my computers i build
ok i fixed it without the changing the psu or anything
well, for the curious, what was the problem? i would have checked to be sure the hs/fan was fully seated.

that was the problem i just wiped off all of the components under the heat sink (socket,FETs,etc) and it works but im having a problem standing it up because when i do it shut down like before so im monitoring cpu temps with cpucool

Did you apply new thermal compound to the heatsink?

no but im going to im out of it and i have to go get more i know but would the processor getting hotter under no load be a result of this or just cuz its a petium 4 prescott
A P4 runs hot anyway and without thermal compound it will run even hotter. This is probably the reason it keeps turning off, it is getting to hot. Intel has a max temp shutdown built into the processor and when the processor reaches that temp it turns off, that's so it will not burn up. Make sure your heat sink and installed correctly and is not loose. I have had very good results using Artic Silver 5 thermal compound. Apply per the following directions according to which processor you have;
