I'm thinking of giving my son's old (ancient) computer a bit of a boost with the least money. He uses it just to research (surf), do school papers, and burn music.

I'm thinking of getting a pair of 512mb SDRAMs and a CPU. His CPU today is a measly 600mHz Celeron. I'm thinking of going for a 1gHz PentiumIII with 133mHz bus. Does anybody know what dip switch settings I should set? The manual only goes up to 933mHz.

Dont waste too much $$$ on the system

as for the jumpers, make sure you set them for FSB133 or the same for any of the EB P3 moddels, or even better do the jumper free if available and configure in the bios, as for the multi - its locked so any setting will give you 7.5x to make 1ghz ;)

Let me know how it goes mate :D

Thanks, apache-lives.

Yes, I don't intend to splurge on this system. The CPU and memory will be it, probably less than $70. We actually have another PC (dual core) as a family PC and I'm about to build one of my own for my photography. Just thought we may be able to squeeze some more use out of the old PC.

The problem is, you'll likely have to spend far more than that. Ancient components like that cost a lot because they're extremely rare. It has nothing to do with performance. Things are expensive when they're rare.
