I'm relatively new to port forwarding. I use to have a cable modem, and I set up port forwarding on my wireless router so I could use my desktop computer as a server. I have since switched to DSL, and cannot duplicate the set up. I've gone through several forums to try different things and nothing seems to work.

I have a Westell 6100F DSL modem and a netgear WGR614v6 wireless modem.

I've tried forwarding the modem to the router and the router to the desktop.
I've set up my desktop with a static IP.
I've tried forwarding the modem directly to the computer.

It will be identical in setup as the Cable.

If you are trying to use your static PC as a server, you should be able to do that simply by using the IP address or name of the computer. The only time you would need to use port forwarding is if you are accessing from outside of your LAN (different location like a wifi hot spot). That's when Port Triggering will kick in.

Yes, I am trying to access my computer's files remotely (from outside of my own network). I could do it before I moved, but now when I put in my dsl modem's external IP address, nothing happens.

It should be as simple as Port Forward to the static IP address of your PC.

You ISP could be blocking you as a rogue server or from hosting information on your PC.

Are you trying to access via FTP, HTTP, or another protocol?

HTTP.

When I try to forward from the DSL modem/router to my computer, it says "Address is not part of the private subnet." I've also tried to forward to the netgear router, and set up forwarding on the netgear router to my desktop, and nothing happens.
