Timeline

I'll be down to the point and present the problem by using a timeline and condense explanations.

August 2006 - Loafing Smurf buys an Asus P5W DH Deluxe.

June 2007 - Asus P5W breaks down and manufacturer mails me another one.

July 2007 - Asus sends a DOA motherboard and manufacturer mails another one.

late July 2007 - Asus sends a shoddy working P5W

November 2007 - P5W is starting to crash and show symptoms of the first P5W that broke down.


Symptoms

When my first P5W broke down, it got stuck on the start up screen of the boot sequence. It hangs if you tried to enter BIOS and there really was nothing that could be done. Symptoms that lead up to this event caused was a huge consumption of virtual memory then a blue screen. The blue screen would say “virtual memory dump”.


My current motherboard is starting to show the same symptoms munus the blue screens. It would consume virtual memory (grinding sound) then the system would hang.

So I was wondering if anybody else has the same problem and how they solved it. I'm on the verge of buying a new motherbord this christmas.

Current system

CPU: Core 2 E6600
Motherboard: Asus P5W DH Deluxe
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7600
Ram: 2 GB

Hi,

I have similar setup :

E6600
P5W DH
8800GTS
2GB Ram (now 4)

Build in January 2007.

No problem so far with bios 1901.

You may want to verify your power supply (are you using an UPS?) or you ram.

You may have bad power to the board that is frying it.

You may try the last bios (24xx) that seems very good.

Tell us your power supply and ram.

I have seen this problem casued by damaged ram, hard drive, and motherboard.
Usually it's the ram and/or hard drive.

Thanks for the help so far everyone.

I think djbrad007 hit a really good point. I seem to have a bad power supply.

Power supply - Antec Smart Power 450W model SP-450 (came with Antec Sonata II ATX case)
Ram - OCZ OCZ2P8001GK 512 PC6400 DDR2 800MHz (2 strips)
OCZ OCZ2N800SR2GK 1GB DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz (one strip)

Reading reviews it seems people that bought the Antec Soanta II ATX case is replacing the power supply it came with.

Antec even admits that they sold faulty power supplies.

I also have a P5W DH Deluxe, bought around the same time as yours.No problems so far. None of what you've been experiencing.Hope the PSU solves your troubles.

It seems that my computer now has some serious problems. It starting to hang at the Windows start up screen. Then when windows does work, it only works for about 3 hours before it crashes. It not a hospitable place to write reports and essays.

So for the time being I'm on my laptop.

I'm reading more into my SP-450 PSU. It seems that they were built with bad capacitors. I'm starting to feel more confident that the power supply has been damaging the rest of my components.

Nonetheless, I plan on buying a different PSU. It seems to be the source of the problem. Even if it isnt, people seem to say its a bad PSU all together.

Reading this website, I'm really starting to think that my faulty PSU damaged my motherbord.

I seem to be getting exactly the same symptoms that it listed.

If you do have bad caps Antec should replace the PSU for you. I've had an Antec SP 2.0 for over a year without any issues.

4 Hard Drives(2 raid 2 storage)
X1900XT (similar power use to a 8800GTS)
SB Audigy 2zs
WinTV PVR 250
1 DVD burner

Guess i got lucky, Most of that system now runs on an Antec TP 380s(from the first Sonata with 18 amps on the single 12 volt rail)

P5W DH
E6600 @ Stock
1 Hard Drive
X1900XT (similar power use to a 8800GTS)
1 DVD reader

So either way under normal circumstances the SP 450 does have the power, but as said they had a problem with bad caps. So contact Antec and see if they will RMA it....I have never overloaded the 450 but i know that the 380 just shuts off in such a case.....from what i read the 450 should shut off before any damage happens....
