I can't stand any version of IE, not even the new one which is supposed to be better.

IE
I tried the fox but didn't find it that special. All I need is the web page to be displayed. Don't really care how.

Only found 2 downsides to the fox.

I prefer firefox - I like to leave IE fully updated and configured in the default manner for use with 100% trusted sites (and no others) that have trouble in firefox. I use firefox for everything else.

As for the sites that don't work in firefox ... that's mostly because I've got so many mods running on firefox and so many default settings changed that, by intent, some websites don't work without fiddling. All in the name of security.

The cost of this approach: Time spent configuring firefox
The benefit of this approach: Essentially eliminates the threat of web pages hijacking my computer and installing viruses. Fewer ads to view on websites (especially annoying flash ads), faster web page loading (much faster ... I'm not talking about a difference you have to measure to see), more functionality.

If I were less inclined to spend the time, I'd run on firefox and still keep IE around for those rare pages that don't render perfectly on a default-configured firefox.

Firefox. I just can't stand Internet Exploder. I hear Opera is nice but being closed source I don't trust it.

Firefox is not without its problems. It's actually pretty bloated and sluggish (comapre to say.. Opera). If you don't believe me, open a few tabs and look at your memory usage. It often uses even more memory than IE.

With that said, I use Firefox because I love the add-ons (and I have the memory to spare.) - pretty good browser overall. I don't care for IE, and will probably never use it. Opera is almost always the first to innovate, and most features that you now use in FFox came from Opera. But for some reason, Firefox is more pleasant to use. Maybe it's because it is a little more traditional, and I'm used to it.

I personally prefer IE, a lot of people says FF is faster and more secure than IE, but the difference isn't noticeable at all, and the last time my pc was hijacked by a web page or a hacker was emmm.... well never, I'm smart enough to know not to click that flashy ad or run that suspicios .exe, the only downside to IE is the ad-block feature of FF, but IE makes up for it with looks, simplicity and reliability (FF hates me and keeps crashing on me :'()

So does IE 7.

I work on a Web application and I need to make it work with IE 7 and FireFox 2, so I use both all day.

I prefer FireFox because:
- it has an Error Console which helps a lot when I screw up in the javascript code.
- it doesn't support ActiveX - that makes it safer
- it's targeted less by malware authors (they focus on IE to get 4 times more victims)
- it has plugins like FlashBlock and AdBlock which make my surfing MUCH more pleasant

However, as a developer, I find IE much easier to work with. It integrates with Visual Studio, it shows javascript errors instead of just logging them, it's generally more forgiving when my HTML doesn't close tags right, etc.

I think both are good browsers and kudos to their authors :)

I personally hate Firefox, IE7 and Opera.

Gasp.

I am using MSN Explorer at both home and work. Yes, MSN-E is just a reformated version of IE7, but I love the MSN-E user interface.

MSN-E has NO tab browsing. The user controls are limited. And there are no add-ons or plugins.

But MSN-E does have is a clean, easy to use and modify Navigation Bar with simple controls for feeble minded people like myself. And with 100+ computers in the business, MSN-E has proven to be a big hit with the employees.

Ok, a whole bunch of my employees are little old ladies. Then there is the group of busty, brainless blondes that work for me (working for the family business does have some benefits...wink, wink ..... I get to interview the busty blondes :) ). So in a way my employees are not really representative of the general population.

(a bit like this poll)

However, I do keep IE7 on my desktop. I perform a moderate amount of web development and need to view my output in a preview browser. IE7 is the only browser that works flawlessly for that task.

I use Firefox because it has wonderful addons. I use IE only when FF has problems with any webpage. I agree that Opera is good and also faster, but the lack of addons (google toolbar for example) have kept me away from it. Firefox is fast enough.

I use ff as my personal browser and IE for work-related stuff. I much prefer firefox as the tabbed browsing is better laid out and the extensions are brilliant for it. Plus I have the portable version on my usb stick which is very handy when I'm out and about.

I'm under GNU/Linux - thus, it's down to Firefox, Opera or Konqueror (I sometimes use Links).
With the Web Developer extention, Firefox is the ultimate web dev machine: Javascript errors logging, source code highlighting, generated content, CSS error reporting, direct on-page CSS editing...
Opera is nice and fast, but its using of both W3C and IE DOMs makes it unsuited for cross-browser development - so I develop under Firefox, cross-check with Opera and Konqueror, then fire the virtual macine to repair the damage under IE6 and 7.
IE7 is abysmal in its lack of innovation: it is nothing more than a bug fix and code cleanup of IE6's engine, with an horrendously frozen interface glued on - in my eyes, it's a mere beta of a bug fix version that should have been out in 2002.
Let's not mention that it's buggy as hell, and that there's NO way to report said bugs to the devs (Mozilla, KDE and Opera all have some -fast- return on bug reports).

If you want a FAST browser though, the late alphas of Firefox 3 leave every and all browsers in the dust: the new rendering engine (Gecko 1.9) and graphics interface layer (Cairo) make it blindingly fast - while improving CSS compatibility even more.

Opera is faster than firefox (at least in the current release build) and has a smaller memory imprint.
How about safari?

BULLSH*T unfortanctly knwo amtter what any says, IE7 is the better, there is a huge think that Fx is the Techies choice, this has stuck when it is the inferiour browser.

All the add on what with IE7 even things like mouse gesture.

the GUI is nicer and cleaner and more function. i use both of them (i have to use Fx on Linux) it not bad, it just not the best.

I find that Fx works ontop of windows while IE7 works with.

Now watch me get flamed for telling the truth

Yep, IE7 is the best in my book. Faster to bootup, nicer interface, better tabbed browsing, doesn't ask to update every day, web pages look much better in it, etc. FireFox doesn't win in any category as far as I am concerned.

I use IE because im too lazy to try anything different.

IE7 is updated every month (3-6Mb download, reboot required) - Firefox is updated when required (70 - 600 K download, browser updated on next load). Which method is best? Personally, I don't like having to reboot my computer because DLLs are all over the place, and I don't mind restarting my browsing session once the download has been completed.
Firefox also provides spell checking on input and text fields - visibly, IE7 doesn't, if Dobby is any example...
IE7 is faster to load than Firefox, that's for sure - however, it is incredibly slow to use (Javascript engine 10x slower than Firefox's, CSS rendering slow too, static DOM...). I'd rather spend 3 extra seconds waiting for Fx to load, and having it blast through pages, than waste time for a scroll to finish, or a page to refresh in IE...

IE7's Jscript is, currently, the only 'current' ECMAscript engine that requires special optimizations due to brain-dead garbage collection and crappy reference tracking. I'm citing the IE developers (those who maintain this engine).

All in all, I usually recommend Firefox first, Opera second, then Konqueror or Safari, and then... Amaya or Lynx (for desperate people). IE is not recommendable.

I use Opera at work because they still haven't updated to XP SP2 so they aren't running IE7. Also because they have the IE settings locked out and have all the traffic routed through a proxy which causes problems with a number of sites, so by using Opera I can set it up to not use that proxy.

At home though I use IE7. I have no issues with it. I still find a few sites which have issues with Opera, and I perfer how some of the things work in IE7 to Opera anyway.

Reply to erloas

OK... If you must know, I use Opera. Why? Becuase it is faster then firefox and IE6-7 and it always just works. Pluse it has lots of little things you can do to it.....

I honestly say use Opera. If not and you had to chose between those two.... then its firefox for the win!!!

FF because of the plugins.

But it takes longer to load than IE on XP.

I use Firefox, because it is safer than IE.
Firefox is on it's way down. Sometimes you have to manually kill it's process after exiting.
Also very slow starting.
I do aprreciate it though.

I prefer FF. I too feel abit more safe without Active X doing things behind my back.

Also, you can use FF to view things in IE (IE tab, or IE view). Basically it shows a FF icon (it can be any where your choose) when its in FF mode. Click on it once it changes to IE mode which I find useful.

I also like the FTP extension you can use with it as well. :D

Hi,

Two years ago firefox was really more accurate and faster to display webpage, but now, both of them are almost the same. The only downside for IE his is vulnerability and to be a target for hacker. More firefox users we will come more hackers will be attrack to that browser too. So do like me ,used both of them, fully update IE for some site and used firefox for the rest.

sorry .. english is not my first langage

I find internet explorer 7 is easily exploited and hijacked...I keep getting the message I have to little bandwidth in gmail with IE...spyware maybe...with FireFOX it works amazingly...plus the recovery session when you restart your internet explorer is really cool:)

Firefox uses about twice the memory that IE7 does. Hopefully FF3 will fix the bloat. I use FreeBSD mostly, so naturally I prefer Firefox.

aww man !! I remember a few years ago when I used IE6 to Google naked pictures of Angelina Jolie... I had like 30 IE pages open within a minute of all these porn sites, I just wanted to see Jolie naked. I had my stuff hijacked countless times.
I would get ads when I wasn't even on the internetz. LOL
Fire Fox fixed all that, I had to restore install windows cause it was so bad. I dont have adware & spyware install them selfs anymore. FIREFOX FTW!!!

I've got IE tab installed on FireFox, but honestly I cant remember the last time I used it....

Defiantly FF is my browser of choice, then Opera second...

I tried the IE8 beta, its faster, but still lacks the speed of pretty much every other browser out there and has the configurability of a brick.

I use Firefox 3 with IE tabs addon for viewing pages that will only open in IE due to Active X. I use this both at work and home.

Gotta love MS writing the standard, but they dont follow it. Active X sucks.

I have the IE8 beta on my PC for grins atm. Thats the only reason. Otherwise IE6 is far more stable and easier to use without the crappy interface of IE7.
