Hello there,

I have almost built my computer now. I am asking that should I get a vga cooler for my 8800 GTX when my aim is to get Crysis, UT3 and other games like Bioshock to run as smooth as possible. I am going to overclock if that makes any significant performance increase.

What do you suggest?

At the moment I think I am going to stick with the stock cooler, but how warm is the chipset itself with a stock cooler and stock clocks?

Thanks in advance! :)

Well OC'ng a 8800GTX will make a difference in how much FPS u get, and in some games (it will help u to run the game smoother) but not for all games
for example for Crysis it will help but for UT3 u wont see a noticeable difference because will handle it very well even @ 2048x1536 :)

I understand that it will not increase the performance in all games and sometimes if there's a difference, it's possible that you will not see the difference except with some benchmark software.

I would like to know what kind of cooler should I get for my 8800 GTX?

I was just looking at Thermalright HR-03 Plus. If I get it, what 92mm fan should I get for it?? Is "Zalman 92mm quiet mode Fan ZM-F2" good?

Completely worth it , Gtx has got at least a good 50mhz core and a 100mhz memory you can push out on stock and before you think about changing voltage.

Dont buy a new cooler for it , the stock cooler is very good, mine(when OC'd) runs @ 56 idle and 76 load

on my 8800gtx, at the settings i use, crysis climbs from being unplayable to playable when i overclock as much as possible. this equates about a 8 fps increase. also, ive noticed maps/textures load faster when the card is overclocked. make sure you use rivatuner so you can fine tune the frequencies of your shaders in addition to your memory and core clock.

8 fps from unplayable to playable , so am guessing you were under 18 or 19 and jumped up to 25-26 ... 40% increase ? 800Mhz core , 3k Mem ? 9 series ?

well, 'unplayable to playable' is perhaps too black and white a phrase for me to use, and it is subjective.

But yes, I went from about 24 to 32 fps when everything is fine tuned. And this was benchmark, not entirely accurate. Actual in game performance probably more around 6 fps increase, but at these low framerates, that's pretty significant.

Overclocking will do wonders for games that are GPU sensitive like Crysis, heres a benchmark of mine with my overclocked 8800GTX and my E6600 CPU at 2.4GHz vs. 3.2GHz. Kaisellgren is right about that its not so much about more FPS, but about the whole game running smoother. What I notice most was that my minumum, average FPS was always above 60 FPS and ran with much more smoothness with the OC. Without the OC my FPS would be 50-60 FPS mostly under 60 though and didn't run nearly as smooth. Have a look at my minumum. average frames per second skipping the first test and focus on the last three.

wow systemlord, how did you get your shader clock so high? Some sort of aftermarket cooling i'm guessing?

No stock cooling in a Silverstone TJ09 PC case. I haven't even tried to push it further, I'll try to push it further. I found my GPU core limit right at 663MHz so I backed off to 651MHz and tested using 3DMark06 for three strait hours without a hick-up. I'll try pushing the Vram a little more to. These revision A2's must run better and cooler than the first batch of 8800GTX's, because this one idles lower than my 7800GTX did. I don't expect much more from this card as far as overclocking go's.

overclocking your videocard makes for a very noticeable increase in performance especially on games where the videocard struggles to run

the key is to first overclock the GPU until you reach it's max overclock, then overclock the memory until you reach it's max overclock

overclocking the GPU offers more performance improvement than overclocking the memory

but it is good to overclock both

(when you feel that you have reached your max overclock, you will need to go a lot of testing to make sure the card is 100% stable, for that I recommend running games like FEAR (you can get fear combat for free) and second life

second life is a great game for testing videocard stability

the second life game engine is unstable at best.

when I overclocked many different geforce 7 series cards, they showed 100% no distortions of games like crysis beta, elder scrolls oblivion and other games like that, but when running second life, the screen was plagued with distortions like prim objects from someones leg stretching across the screen

and through that, I lowered the overclocks for that I lowered the memory to stock to see if it would stop, and it didn't so i brought the memory speed back to the last overclocked speed then started to lower the gpu clock 1MHz at a time then running second life for 20 minutes to see if it was stable

then after a few hours of testing, I was able to type up a report and and give it back to my friends with their card so they will know which rivatuner settings to use

PS for crysis, the area where you notice the overclock helping the most, is when you are in the alien base in the mountain

those levels is where you really see the difference the overclock made.
