GeForce 8600M GT DX10 question....

The short answer is no.

Then why do the brand new Mackbook Pro's have them? They are made to be graphically powerful aren't they? So they can handle image creation/manipulation.

To Oofki: you do realize that he's talking about a mobile card, right? I know they have GeForce Go 7900s, my friend has one and it's really slow on Vista.

@OP, I honestly think that you should be able to play at an acceptable level, but don't have high hopes.

Actually, the 8700M GT is the fastest mobile Direct X10 graphics card out, and is slower than a stock 8600GTS.

right now, I am typing this on a new MBP that I got for college. Like they said, don't have incredibly high hopes, but at the same time for a mobile chip, it is surprisingly powerful. The 8700 that they are talking about is just an overclocked 8600 gt, there is nothing physically different about it. I have played the Bioshock demo on it at 1440x900 with all settings except AA on high and it ran just fine, like 30-45 fps, but this isn't really what you would call future-proof. Then again, who buys a laptop for future-proofing? It's all about mobility and in that respect, I am quite happy with this laptop.

it might not be as fast as a7950 but it wont burn your leg off either. And you might actually be able to play something for more than 20 minutes without it being plugged into the wall.

Wonder how well it overclocks or if future drivers will help. I had a dell 1705 with the Geforce 7900gs and it was great. I hope this will be the same speed or close if I OC it or get tweaked drivers. If it is then it will be able to play most any games at 1920x1200 without problem. I ordered my 1720 with a lower screen (1440x900 i think) to help it run better in games so we will see...

Oh I played it safe, I ordered the 1720 with Core 2 2.2ghz, 4 gig ram, 8600m gt video and 1440x900 screen. I am hoping I can run native res with all or most settings maxed...

Hope you are wrong... I was pretty impressed with the 7900gs and hope the 8600 can do close to the same... specially considering I am going from a cored duo 1.8 to core 2 2.2, 2 gig ram to 4 gig ram, and screen 1920x1200 to 1440x900... Geez...

A stock 8600GTS runs at a 675MHz core, 1.45GHz shader, and 2GHz(effective) memory speeds. The 8600M GT only runs at 475MHz core, 950MHz shader, and 1.4GHz(effective) memory so the performance difference between it and your 8600GTS would be pretty large. Also, the only difference between Bioshock in Direct X9 vs. Direct X10 is the use of soft particles.

yes the 8700 is out you can only buy it with a couple of laptops.... and BTW, the 8600m gt runs modern games just fine. the stock drivers suck, and you get massive performance increases with desktop versions of the 8xxx series drivers. I can run bioshock with high settings, at a decent resolution, without dipping below 30 FPS regularly.
