Got to hate it when peeps quote your post and you've made a typo, especially when you're too much of a gimp to know how to edit it :)

these are probably some of the most poor articles ever at toms hardware.

Wow, I had no idea it was that terrible. On reading it again... yeah! Every single paragraph is an excercise in poor writing. What was I thinking!

Please get into specifics though, if you're going to make an extreme blanket statement like that I'd like to know how exactly I've failed the readers so badly that I've managed to write one of the poorest articles to ever grace Tom's... :sarcastic:

Unless you're just a whiny troll though... If that's the case, I guess it's your job to drop by and make unsubstantiated complaints. Carry on! :D

I was able to push an e6600 to 3.72 ghz on the stock cooler and it rebooted after getting to the gui in windows. It works at 3.7 pretty good though, stock cooling, can't do anything tasking with it until I get the phase change cooling in but apparently the 680i mobo will allow for 1.8 v settings on the cpu as opposed to the 650i's simple 1.6

I"m seeing Intel cpu's overclock less and less..

their binning down chips well and prevent the end user from getting significant gains.

that said, the E6320 I had was @ 1.375v on air; its the lowest possible voltage I could run at most stable.

you need to turn that bad boi up to 1.43 volts and try again make sure you drop the HT from 5x each way to 1x and raise the mcp voltage about .1 ht bus is where i find most weaknesses so bring it up.1 as well

how do you figure?

a decent 775 SLI board is around $149 cheapest....

The cheapest 8800GTS 320 is $279.... so 279x2=558
not to mention you better plunk down an extra $30-50 for a better PSU
to run those things.

no, a budget build is one GPU - a single 8800gts 320 would suit just fine as most people on a budget arent playing beyond 1650x1080

It is actually not my "opinion" that 2 8800GTS are better than 1 8800GTX. There are published benchmarks that support it as fact. The question you raise is whether it is more cost effective as a budget machine, and I think it is IMHO. Given than you can get 2 GTS GPUs at *approximately* the same cost as 1 GTS (+/- ~20$ last I checked). Whether or not you will need a new PS depends on what you are starting with -- you can't automatically assume you will need a new PS. In fact, most people assume they need a new PS when they don't because there is so much hype about getting the max wattage PS available. Most of the time it is PS overkill. A 420-500W PS (didn't take the time to do the math) with the system Tom recommends with 2 8800GTS cards should be adequate. So for my money, 2 GTS that perform faster than 1 GTX at approximately the same price is a better bargain machine.

There are plenty of good articles describing how to do the math to determine what PS is right for your needs.

Wow, what a comment section on such a quality article.
I am reacquainted myself with the world of computer building for myself after a bit of an absence.....You would be amazed how long a A7N8X DLX with XMS Corsair and 2500+ Barton can last!!!!!

Anyway, obviously the market is being dominated by Intel at the moment but articles like this give the same ideas that back in 2002 Toms Hardware steered so many of us toward.
I would def. have liked to have seen the E6600 overclocked but this article shows how unnecessary it is to spend a hell of a lot of money to achieve quite little when all you want to play good games and do general geek stuff.

Good to see the content quality and thought process in Toms Hardware hasn't changed and we can all become more informed readers.
Cheers buddy!
