Hey people, Im building a new rig in the next few days and buying everything for it minus a gpu which I will upgrade later, but after all this hype about p35 and x38, im almost tempted to wait..

My reasoning for going for it now with a p5n32-e sli plus mobo are,

----No matter how top of the line you think your new system will be, there will always be somthing that beats it just around the corner..

----Games manufacturers are likley not going to be making games that take full advantage of pci-e 2.0 OR the supposed 40% (?) speed increase of penyrn based CPU's

----A Q6600 overclocked to 3.0 ghz will last me a good year or two before it starts struggling in games.

----Gpu manufacturers (Nvidia in my case) won't need or want to move their graphics card to pci-e 2.0 because most high end gpus don't even take full advantage of 16x pci-e slot, let alone double bandwitch 32x slots..

----It may seem like a good idea to wait but x38 is likley to be very expensive and DDR3 RAM is a waste of money imo because pc 6400 can operate at 1-1 ratios with any modern cpu if im correct.

I have had my heart set on the p5n32-e sli mobo since I found out it was basically a striker extreme without the huge price tag and pickyness about memory, it includes sli which Im not interested in now, but may be a viable option to improve performance a year or two down the line, and other than that its a rock solid board with good overclocking a features I like the sound of.

However the GA_P35_DS4 board by gigabyte caught my eye because it is a p35 based motherboard for the same price as the p5n32-e-sli and supports DDR 2 memory & penryn

However, my reasoning is that, if I find myself wanting to upgrade to penyrn, I will probably need ddr3 ram to use it to its full power..

Its a mess because im literally 3-4 days away from buying a computer with surround sound, 4gb ram and a quad core processer, but all the people raving about how the x38 chipset will render this technology obsolete is making me worry, I don't mind being out of date, but I would hate to have my computer become obsolete because of some dammn chipset I didn't have the patience to wait for...

So im asking you guys, for my main use, gaming.

Do you think building my computer around the p5n32-e sli plus mobo and ignoring the p35 chipset will hurt the longetivity of this system, Im not worried about being on the bleeding edge, I tbh I don't care if penryn outperforms every cpu on the market, I just want to be safe in the knowledge that when developers start making more dx10 games, this system will be more than adequate to handle them and I won't have wasted £1700 pounds on a computer that handles crysis, bioshock, hellgate london and alan wake okay but struggles with any newer game..

Thoughts, opinions?

Thanks!

£1700 worth of todays tech should easily last you max on games for the next year! Aslong as you have dx10 capabilities which is coming into it more and more and will be a must for the future. basing it on that motherboard will have no problem and yeh it does support the 1333fsb prossessors coming out.

The new tech that keeps coming out is a bitch in the comptuer area lol.

Id say you'd be safe for 1 - 2 years on what you've listed, and thats just on high quality.

pcie2 also lets u hav more power from the slot so less need for psu plugs into the card this is really important and when do u ever make tech when u "need it". pcie2 is ready for future cards so they can refine the technology. btw that proc can last u longer then that 3-4 years id say

now then if u buy something now and avoid the p35 lik i did, when u do ur upgrade in 2 years or w/e. ull still be able to get newer procs, and pcie 1 support is gona be there look at agp, its probably on its last legs now as they wana cut it out on dx10

If i were you, i would go with p 35. p 35 based boards can do whatever you can with your asus board.

If you're planning on OCing your q66, I'd go for the P35. The price difference isn't huge, but it has great performance gains, especially with the quad core CPU's. Overall performance gains aren't spectacular, and I wouldn't bother with DDR3, but with a quad especially, there ARE significant advances in overclocking ability and general performance.

Got my Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P in testerday. I like it. Did better for overclocking than my 965P-S3. I was going for FSB over GHz.

If you're going quad you do know that there is a price cut due 22nd July?
As for SLI in a year or 2 my experience is that you're better selling your old card & picking up the latest king of the hill (or 1 step down) rather than SLI.
