Greetings.

I listen to the music just about every day and also play games from time to time on my computer. It's fairly high-end, but has pretty bad speakers and an ancient sound card. The sound card I'll pick will be probably Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer. As for the speakers, however, there are two choices I'm considering:

GigaWorks ProGamer G500
http://www.creative.com/products/p [...] duct=10814
or
Logitech Z-5450 THX Wireless
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/ [...] 9&cl=gb,en

The room where I've my computer is very small (about 9 square metres) and I may have a problem with correct placement (in order to achieve 5.1 effect).

Any help would be appreciated.

Edit : I use Vista, if that makes any difference :)

I am not sure what you are asking, as the speakers pretty well self explain where they should go....Center, left front, right front, left rear, right rear? What other conditions are there in your room that would make this setup not work for you?

Well, shouldn't they be placed at the same height? If that's so, I might have a problem.

That's what the calibrate function is for.

with PC speakers it doesn't really matter if you have a small room. i have my side and rear speakers on stands. they are very close to me and work fine enough.

i haven't tried either those speakers. i don't suppose any shops near by stock them so you could try them out?

oh and remember, all those specifications are lies or at least stretching the truth.

Reply to strangestranger

No, not really. Once you get them placed, you will be able to adjust the sound level from each area so where you are sitting you get the desired surround sound effect.

well either of those will more then fill a room that size.

Things to consider: Logitech

How many wireless devices do you have? 2.4ghz cause problems for some people.

How much room do you have for the control pod/wireless transmitter?

Do you have 2 plugs near the rear speaker locations.

Things to consider: Creative

Do you want to run some wires :)

They both have pros and cons. i tend to prefer a smaller control pod's as i don't have the desk room. For me wireless is out as well, way too much interference.

As said above you best bet is to go to a local shop(ewwww Future Shop) and listen.

Thanks. As you can see, I'm a real newbie when it comes to sound systems ;)
I don't need to worry about interference, as I don't have any wireless equipment. So I guess it's just a question of which one would be better in such conditions.
Is the better quality offered by the Logitech speakers really worth it?

what do you mean better quality?

Better sound quality.

hmm, i thought you said you were new to speakers?

have you listened already to both of them?

Reply to strangestranger

Do note that Logitech does not officially support the Z-5450 anymore, about 3 months ago they were discontinued. If you have to RMA you will get a Z-5500 instead.

Nope, but I did read some reviews of both. Even though I know it's not much ;)

Where are you from? Because if you're in Canada you can get the Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1 system for 281.99 before tax. Much better sound than Logitech.

Go to www.canadacomputers.com. They have one set left last time I checked. Get it while you still can! I know I got it when there was like 3 left, so hurry if you can. :)

Agreed. I've heard both and prefer the Klipsch (I'm a musician/audiophile so I have somewhat discerning ears).

I'd buy them if I could.
At any rate, I must now pick speakers for about 250-300 $ or wait a few months and pick more expensive ones. So it boils down to this.

Sorry to "revive" this topic, but I'll be making a purchase soon and I'd really appreciate any advice. Like I've said, I must now pick speakers for about 250-300 $ or wait a few months and pick more expensive ones. What's your stance?

Reply to Warchief

Do you really need 5.1 speakers, personally I never saw the appeal with them, have you considered a top spec pair of stereo speakers? Like the Creative GigaWorks T20...

Reply to jamesgoddard

Yeah, I did. I still do, actually. I'm mostly concerned with the music quality. I wouldn't mind having 5.1 in games, however ;)

Reply to Warchief

The z-540's are worse then the z-530's. I use the 530s and they are great, $50 new aswell. the z-540's dont last long and are buggy.
