I can't seem to find an answer on this, or at least after the first few pages of a google search, but can Windows Home Server be used as a workstation to access the internet? I don't need to play games or write a book via MS Word, but would like to be able to use it to check email and surf.

My situation is that I have some parts laying around from several builds and reb-builds to build a decent PC. Was going to make a XP pro based pc for my workroom to surf the web and check email while working on projects. Nothing intense. My workroom is also my "data center" with NAS, Router, Switch, Cable Modem and VoIP device in a corner of the room near my workbench. But now I'm thinking of making those parts work as a WHS based server. The PC case has room for 5 hdds, and I can use just about any mobo, etc. Does WHS have a "desktop" and ability to run applications like IE7 or Outlook express?

So, must I choose between building a PC or a server? Or can I build the server (same parts) and use WHS, but still be allowed to surf from that WHS device?

Thanks,

Curt J.

Yes, it's based on Windows Server 2003.

Yeah, you'll probably have to uninstall the Internet Security that is installed with it. It prevents use of IE for the most part - easiest way around is to uninstall it.

A somewhat related question...

I recently built a new Vista system and am currently using my old system to run a weather station. The computer was dying and I plan on rebuilding it with mostly new componets...the old system is over four years old.

My question is...can I run my weather related software

Thanks for your input.

Don't know what software you're running. You'll have to try but I'd guess that as long as it doesn't need exclusive administrator rights, it will probably work.

Thanks for the response...It doesn't require Administrator rights just that it needs to run 24/7
