Hello I'm trying to install vista x64 on my sister's comp. Here are her specs:

8800GT 512MB
E7200 C2D 2.66ghz (yes it's 64 bit rdy)
160GB HDD (IDE)
4GB OCZ ram
DVD-Writer

So away I go with the installation and here I am stuck at the drive selection screen.

There's a msg saying: "The computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk controller is enabled in the bios menu".

I've made sure I have:

1) bios updated
2) IDE controller turned on
3) set boot sequence to 1) DVD 2)HDD 3)USB
4) deleted the old XP partition and created a brand new partition before attempting installation.

I can't think of why it won't work

Does anyone know a solution to this?

solution found here

problem was older builds of XP SP3 were remanents of boot data obstructing with Vista's installation (even after I've cleared and formatted my HDD).

Apparently it didn't really format anything so using diskpart, i was able to

1) format my volume
2) clean out my volume (ensure that my XP is completely gone)
3) set Volume on my IDE as primary.

It's a problem not very well known and I had to spend 4 hours of researching trying to find this useful page. I hope it gets indexed by google and it'll be more useful to others who may have this issue.

What I did differed from what the instructions were slightly (although mainly the same). My instructions are more thorough so incase if the link's instructions didn't work try mine.

1) insert vista DVD and pretend that you're going to install Vista
2) instead of clicking install now go to "repair" option
3) select "cmd prompt"
4) type in "diskpart"
5) type in "select partition 0"
6) type in "select volume 0"
7) type in "format RS=NTFS QUICK"
8) type in "active"
9) type in "clean"
10) type in "exit" and press restart

Reboot and let vista installation boot up again. Begin your installation as you would normally.

Thanks for the answer. Could be usefull to someone else! :)

Did you try to delete all partition within the Vista graphical setup? This is what I normally do.

Just an update...

the problem wasn't solved... It apparently came back. I've been mucking around for a while now... and still no go.

I've fallen back to my old Asus P5GC mobo and things worked from there and here are my conclusions

If the solution mentioned above did not work. Then it's most likely your motherboard.

My sister's mobo is Gigabyte GA-EP45-D3SL. This motherboard seems to have a few issues. People with this problem have reported to RMA the board.

I'm now in the process of going through RMA at the moment.

This just gave me a poor image of gigabyte as I've purchased a Gigabyte board during the Pentium 3 era.

I hope on their return shipment I'm going to get a working board or I'm going to stick with Asus from now on.

My asus P5Q mobo is working like a charm on vista 64bit and have had no problems.
