A friend sends us word documents that arrive with a "_doc" extension, and Word 2007 Home edition won't open it unless we manually change the extension to ".doc."
Windows Vista seemingly won't allow me to name Word as the program to open "_doc" files.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Because _doc is not a file extension. File extensions always follow the last "." in a filename. If you meant "._doc" that's a different story.

You're right, I meant "._doc."

That's rather odd. The only ._ files I've seen are usually hidden files on a flash drive that seem to be backups in case the program crashes. This allows it to open the file to the state it was when last auto-saved. This is just a theory though, not fact. I am not certain how Word restores a document after the program crashes.
