Ok,
I have Vista Ultimate on my desktop and after shutting off UAC soon after I got it I have actually not had many problems until the last few days. A number of programs seem to just freeze most notably Windows Update and the Problems Reports and Solutions. Both seems to go into some perpetual loop and eventually into the '(not Responding)' mode. When I reboot I get the 'Configuring Updates' and a reboot takes about an hour. When I eventually get back into Windows there is no change.
Not sure where to even start to troubleshoot this. Any ideas?

Try turning off automatic updates so that it cant get anymore for a while and try to let it run its course for a time.
It may have several updates its trying to install and wont do anything else until it thinks its done.
Its possible that it is chocking on one of the updates.
You may even need to uninstall one or more of the updates to figure out which one is causing the trouble.

For what its worth I use a prog called autopatcher.
Its pretty handy as it collects the patches and updates and upgrades and allows you to research them and install them one at a time or not at all if wanted. It will work offline and will help to uninstall a patch if necessary.
