I posted this in the Networking section but I'm thinking it should've gone here instead since it's an XP issue... sorry...

Here's the deal:

I installed a new motherboard and did a repair install of media center xp (I reformatted only one partition which had the Windows folder in it, and reinstalled Windows into that folder...). Seemed to go fine...

I tried to connect to the internetbut to no avail. Here's my setup: (Cable wire to a Comcast modem. Cable from Comcast modem to a Netgear Wireless Router: WGT624v3. Ethernet cable from router to my computer.)

It kept saying "Acquiring Network Address" and when I tried to "repair" it said "Windows could not because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing IP address".

I did a little research on this sweet site and went with trying to fix the problem in the services.msc and "Start"ing up the DNS CLinet, the DHCP Client, and the Remote Procedure Call.

Bingo! I was then able to connect.

THEN after restarting the computer I had to do this whole thing all over again...

Question (finally!): What can I do so that I don't have to go to services.msc, etc. EVERYTIME I start the computer to get to the internet?

On a side note, I also think theres a problem with a lot of the programs listed in the services.msc that do not "Start" when the computer starts up. They are listed as Active but I need to Start them up... I'm having difficulty performing the Windows Update (error messages abound - where it tells me the solution is to Start this or that service in services.msc), when I click on the 60 days to activate windows yellow balloon at the bottom right it goes away but I don't go anywhere! etc. What could be the problem?

Have a look in the event logs to see if there are any messages about the services failing to start. Make sure that the startup type for these services is set to "Automatic".

I'll have to check the events log but I know for a fact that the sevices were set to Automatic, it's just that they don't start up automatically when Windows boots up...

In that case there should be some messages in one of the event logs (off the top of my head I think it's System) giving a bit more information.

Did you do a full windows repartition(Reformatted the disk in NTFS) and install? Or did you just select the repair option?

A motherboard swap often requires a complete reformat.

Anyway when multiple services are malfunctioning after an install the cause is usually due to a bad install. check your install disc for scratches; clean, repair or replace if necessary. Then do a full reinstall ie reformat the drive to wipe it out completely and proceed with the install.

I just ordered an external hard drive so I'll just transfer all my important files (music, etc.) to that and then do a full reformatting and clean install.

It was probably just a bad install as some of you indicated...

I also don't have a lot of what should be listed in the System Tools option. There no Windows Activation, No Defrag, etc...

Thanks for all your help though...
