The reality distortion field was at full power today when Jobs and company had another one of those iCult new product release shows. Basically they have a few upgrades to their ludicrously overpriced laptop line. The case is cut from a solid block of aluminum!!!

That's nice. This has got to be getting old, even to the iFaithful in attendance. I'd let it go except they once again brought Vista into the discussion, smugly saying that Vista was a big factor in their dizzying rise to a market share of 18%! (to big laughs and applause) Oh, the faithful was inspired with that brother!

But wait, in the parenthesis on the graphic it said something about (US), meaning of course US market share, not world, where it is about nil, well, a little over 3% (3.6 according to IDC) but still, 18% US, that's a lot, and who cares about those euros and pounds anyway, damn foreigners, 18% US!!!! What an achievement brother!

But I think maybe Jobs mentioned in passing (what sleight of hand!) that this was 'retail' share. Hmmm, retail, well that's how computers are sold right, retail? Uh, no. Retail excludes corporate and direct sales, which I think includes, uh, among other things, Dell, maybe. Anyway, this Newsweek article sets the record straight.

The most tantalizing bit of news in the whole event was some market share figures that Apple trotted out, claiming that in the U.S. retail market Apple now has 18 percent market share of all units sold and 31 percent share of dollars spent. That helps explain why Microsoft is pumping so much money into Vista ads. But just for a reality check - the key words in that Apple statistic are "U.S." and "retail." Shim at IDC says if you measure market share the old-fashioned way--all units sold, worldwide--Apple's market share was only 3.6 percent in the second quarter of this year. Even if you just count the U.S. market, Apple's share was 8.1 percent. Apple knows it can't be all things to all people. In certain niches--university students, for example--the company is doing quite well. But if the company ever hopes to pick up big share of the overall market, it will have to do more than crank out incremental improvements on its laptops.

In other news Apple stock was down just under 10% today (6.5%) and has lost most of it's value since August (well, about 40%, along with many others, but still . . .) Should be very interesting to see if Daddy keeps buying these college kids Apples when money isn't growing on trees anymore.

I kid of course. Apple has some great stuff, if you like that kind of thing, not that there's anything wrong with that, but enough of this Apple cult already
