Maybe I'm giving Microsoft programmers too much credit here, but doesn't it just seem a bit ridiculous at all of the security holes that are found in every Microsoft OS. Is there a chance... just a tiny chance... that (for various reasons) the U.S. government had those holes deliberately put there for its own uses... and as security experts find them Microsoft issues the appropriate patches and the government reverts to using the next undiscovered "flaw"? As for why MS would go along with this... oh... the whole antitrust thing comes to mind. After all, Microsoft is still a single company.

No, I don't walk around with a tinfoil hat on my head to keep the aliens from using their mind control ray... it just seems like a logical explanation for all of the gaping security holes that we've all come to accept. Additionally, the U.S. government seems to do little to encourage the use of open source software... because with open source software all of the flaws will be there for everyone to see.

I'm just curious if anyone else shares this idea... not saying you believe it's definitely true... just that it's possible.

Open source software is also rife with "holes". You don't hear as much about them because they don't have a majority of the market. So far, these so-called "holes" haven't affected me... and quite often to exploit these "holes" requires some sort of malware to be installed on the system.

Besides, government computers also run Windows. Do you honestly believe it's in the best interest of the government to use computers with known security flaws? No, I don't think so either. You're barking up the wrong tree with this one.

You set a bar and there is always some genius hacker out there who will eventually jump it if he tries hard and long enough. It's programmer vs. programmer and the system is inherently vulnerable. There is more MS could do but if they do it they will break the internet and the apps that run on their OS. DEP is a great security feature but if you turn it on a lot of apps will refuse to run - these apps need to be written for it and this takes time.

If you look at the kinds of holes that get discovered they are usually VERY devious and I'm not sure it is even humanly possible to prevent them all.

All OS'es have holes but it's only the big dog that gets the attention. If OSX or Linux were holding any significant worldwide marketshare they would get this treatment too. Why would invest thousands of man hours cracking an OS with less than 5% share or in Linux case, way less?

The idea that MS would risk it's corporate LIFE and allow years of security issues to seriously erode it's share and it's reputation is kind of hard to swallow.

There was a thread here a day ago that seriously asked if VISTA was some sort of acronym where the S stood for surveilance and was basically a government plot, LOL. CTs are a dime a dozen

you also have to ask the question
Does the Gov. already have the code so as to enable it to read between the lines?
If the phone companies have to give up their info, you have to believe that Bill Gates already gave it up, being the responsible citizen that he is.
Or is that going to be? Hard to tell. Maybe thats how he got rich.
More over with all of the info being collected over the internet you have to think the big brother knows where the repositories are and how to get to them.
Its well publisihed that they are trying.

As Notherdude CTs are a dime a dozen and its up to you to create a alias.
If it helps I actually get a fair amount of mail sent to the house addressed to Stu Pididiot.
