I am building my first system based on a Intel Q9300. It will be a general purpose system used to manage and play my 10,000 mp3 music titles, scan many old photos, organize and edit 10 years of digital photos, web surfing, function as a media center pc, word processing, excel, etc. I'm retired so I don't have time for gaming. I hope to use existing hardware and software from my aged XP systems My biggest need is to convert many many hours of old movies (of line film to digital) 20 years of VHS stuff, family genealogy, photos and then create DVDs for my kids and grand kids while using the system for my above needs.

I want this system to last, be upgradeable (maybe DDR3 when the gouging stops), and I'm not restricted by budget. I'm not into wasting money to have the latest and greatest but want bang for my buck. I'm also able to upgrade software when real multi processing improvements are implemented.

Questions- What OS should I use? My impression is a 64 bit OS can use more than 3gb of memory which is important but may restrict what software and hardware (printers, scanners, cameras etc.) I can use. Is this true, any way to find out what will or won't work? I would prefer to go with new technology ie Vista. Should I start with 32bit then upgrade when 64 bit is more widely used? OEM or Retail?

Would it be worth spending an extra $100 for the additional cache in a Q9450 processor? I would also appreciate any opinions or tips on other things I should consider.

From what you are describing as a use for your computer (Photo Processing, etc) you should go with a Quad Core processor. That way you can work with your video/photos and listen to your music too. Many of the modern photo/video programs are being optimized for multi-processor systems. Vista 64 would be your best bet also due to memory requirements. For the most bang for your buck get a MB that uses DDR2 memory (P-35 chipset is good). Unless you do heavy gaming skip the DDR3 premium. You said that you wnat to use old hardware from you XP system. I would not recommend that for Vista unless it is less than 2-3 years old or you may have driver issues. Most software I have found works fine with Vista 64.

What Jeff Said...

------------------------------ Which Chip? Well, it depends on which set of thieving b@stardz you choose to support: The ones who use insider trading to enrich themselves while running their company into the ground, or the ones who illegally pay vendors to not support the first group.

Wouldn't recommend DDR3 unless your going to pump the FSB of that Q9300 right up and that would require exotic cooling if thats what your asking :). Vista 64 is a great OS and will continue to gain support, drivers are being worked on and the programs you do use with 64bit equivalents will operate faster.
