Mandriva Window Manager/Dell Latitude CPiA Microphone/IR Port
Forum Linux/Free BSD : Linux/Free BSD General Discussion - Mandriva Window Manager/Dell Latitude CPiA Microphone/IR Port
Hey guys,
its rajkalyan.
I have an ancient laptop (Dell Latitude CPiA) and it runs Mandriva.
It currently uses KDE and it is terribly slow.
How do I change it to xfce or if all else fails, fluxbox?
And also, the laptop has a built-in microphone and IR port.
Is there any patch/hack/driver for Mandriva to get them to work?
Thanks,
rajkalyan
Can you give us the full specs please?

Laptop
Dell Latitude CPiA
Mandriva Linux One
Latitude C/Port II
6 gig HD
256 mb memory
TRENDnet WiFi Card
Anything else?
Also, the mic is built in. I never tried it with NT.
Is it a 400MHz PII?
Xubuntu the XFCE version of Ubuntu might work or XFCE under Fedora, or a suitably old version of Fedora or Slax or DSL.
The Ubuntu netbook remix might work too, although you may have some problems with a laptop that old, the netbook remix officially requires at least 384MB of RAM.
Good luck

Eh.. could I stay with mandriva? I've tried the different window managers.
You could keep mandriva but I don't know if mandriva has any RPMs for XFCE.
What version of mandriva one do you have?
Did you install mandriva one on the drive or are you using it as a Live CD?
If there are no official or unofficial RPMs for mandriva then you would have to compile XFCE by hand which is not recommended if you are not familiar with gcc and g++.

There is an XFCE version but it is not an official mandriva product.

I installed it on the drive.
And I'm not sure what version.
And, what about the IR port and microphone?
Have you checked your package manager / mandriva software installer to see if official XFCE PRMs are available?
You need to find out what version you have and install the appropriate RPMs for your version.
Good luck

I think I wont do the switch to xfce because I did it and it looked awful. But about the mic and IR?
Your microphone should probably work, launch your volume control and enable all the different inputs and outputs, usually there are volume controls and mute buttons for each.
Some systems have more than 1 MIC so check the MIC select settings.
What are you trying to do with the IR port? It's probably IrDA.

I don't think it detects it however. I wish for mandriva to be able to use the IR port. If I made it work somehow, could I use a universal remote or something to control it?
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Infrared-HOWTO/
IrDA is intended for high speed data communication between devices, like printers, PDAs, GPS units, etc.
Remote controls use CIR, not IrDA and work differently.
Your can read more about it here http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Infrared [...] -irda.html
Some IrDA units might be able to use CIR otherwise you can get an Lirc compatible IR receiver and remote control.
Good luck
