I've been meaning to bring this up for a while now, I reckon it's about time we had a thread that we can post about open source software we recommend for certain tasks. When I first kicked off into the Linux domain nearly 2 years ago, it was a little difficult to find replacement programs for my windows ones and sometimes when you did find replacements, there was a bazillion to choose from. What I'd like to see is people post the software they recommend, and some comments on why they recommend it. Lets get some nice solid information on here guys and maybe make this thread stickied ;)

I'll recommend a few.

CD/DVD Software:

Brasero - I recently started using this over k3b. Brasero is very simple to use, while maintaining a lot of functionality, it also takes the hassle out of adding extra codecs for burning mp3's.

K3B: Only if your dead set on using KDE software... Otherwise, see above.

Messager Software:

aMSN - I recommend aMSN to people who live on the MSN networks, and like the fancy functions like nudge, custom emoticons and file transfer. aMSN is a little heavy on the footprint though, I've seen it eat 40-50MB of RAM, so I recommend it for desktop PC's with more then 512MB RAM

Pidgin - Is a little less fancy then aMSN, but supports 5+ messenger protocols, and is extremely lightweight (<15MB of RAM). Good for older systems!

FTP:

Filezilla - Easy to use, good GUI and plenty of functions. I went away from gFTP to Filezilla since it was easier to navigate directories and transfer files

Will post some more when I have time.

Everyone and their mom seems to like amarok, but I am not so much a fan of it. I actually prefer audacious (or xmms if audacious doesn't work for w/e reason) because it is nice and lightweight. If you don't need all sorts of library features, audacious media player is pretty darn good.

I'd say something nice about vim for text editing here, but i'd be preaching to the choir ;).

Also, is brasero really that much better than k3b? I really like k3b since it is way better than even nero in terms of burning. For instance I only trust k3b to accurately burn liveCDs or isos of any kind. I haven't actually used brasero yet, so I guess that might be good to try.

Also, I am not a KDE user, but from what i've heard, kopete is a pretty good chat client that supports multiple protocols like pidgin does.
