Geeky - My brothers only machine is his Eee. Hooked up to a monitor and external mouse he finds it's all that he needs bar the disk space. Once the price on SD cards drops a little more we'll have that one sorted for him. It's far more than a toy to those that just need basic web and office functionality. Just making the switch from basic to advanced desktop makes a huge difference in how people look at the Eee. |

You see, before, I wasn't so much arguing that an eeePC doesn't quite do it function-wise for the bulk of computer users (who don't do much more than web browsing with some office stuff sprinkled in). However, my main objection about the eeePC being a good platform for those kinds of users is that it is too small to be practical. There is a trade-off between usability and portability and I believe the ultra-portability of the eeePC comes at the price of reduced usability. Lower screen real-estate and cramped keyboards make using a machine like that a bit of a pain in the you-know-what. Heck, I even have the same gripe about laptops, and they are way bigger than the eeePC!

It's the screen res that is the truly limiting factor. The second generation ones with the higher res larger screen are better in this regard. The small KB is fine for a quick mail or even a slowish IM session but I would agree a bit of a push for coding or serious writing. The thing is that I can get a USB KB round here for £5, a mouse for £3. Really the only one they need to improve is the screen res, something they have made a fair go at with the 901. |

UPDATE - Those of you with an eee and fed up with xandros might want to take a look at eee-Ubuntu. I got it up and running for my brother yesterday and its great. Full on 8.04 with config scripts to sort the key bindings, install routine that lets you run the live CD of a pen drive, Wifi support and the nice desktop effects work!

Hah! your update was almost a month later to the day! Well maybe it was off by about 36 hours, but that was pretty impressive!

It was fairly easy to do. The issue that had been stopping me doing it sooner was the lack of an external CD/DVD drive. The script that allows you to configure a pendrive as a live CD was the turning point, that and the xandros distro having gone tits up!

You can toss the 32bit version of the Ubuntu 8.04 desktop ISO on a 1GB SD card with this script and run the Live image from SD ftp://ftp.wayne.edu/linux_distrib [...] tostick.sh

That's the script I used! We booted from that and then ran the config scripts. I've still got the pendrive with it on for my own use |

I am inclined to agree w/ Linux_0 on that last point. This new "netbook" or "subnotebook" market isn't really about selling computers so much as it is a bit of a throwback to the days of physical terminals / teletype machines. I am inclined to believe that you can't really get any serious work done on these things, but they provide you with a conduit either to the internet or to a faster machine (a desktop machine or server) while you are away from home.

^ Still... a laptop like that is pretty spiffy... lighter, easier to carry... I think I should bring one to school and hook it up to a spare display, mouse, keyboard and get my own non-monitored computing...
