Yeah so when I boot, I have 48 processes running on my computer. I know that it should be running around 20, but it does not. Ive done the typical msconfig, and normal little things that people with an above average level of knowledge might know, but at this point the only thing I think I have left to do is clean up registry.

So my questions is what is the best way to go about it?

Should I use a program, if so which one?

Any light that could be shed would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Robb

Where did you get the number 20 from? I have 54 on my XP Pro computer. MSCONFIG is a diagnostic tool and not for controlling what programs startup. It's really not how many but what's being started.

40s is too high for me, you probably got a lot of stuff runnning you don't need.

grumpy is right you should not use msconfig to set how to start things. if you have SpySweeper then it has a startup shield that allows you to edit windows startup.

if not you can use CCleaner it has a startup list you can edit and its free.

also post us a Hijackthis log and lets see what is running.
