I have found that eratic driver problems with both sound and graphics could be related to the fact that MS Vista does not update key drivers once the OS is installed and all pacthes have been applied.

I Have MS Home Vista Premium Upgrade 32Bit from Windows XP SP2.

These are the drivers I had to check individually to make sure they were upto date:-

1 - IDE Controller Drivers (Intel® 82801FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2653)

2 - PCI Bridge (Intel® 82801 PCI Bridge - 2448)

3 - SMBus Controller (Intel® 82801FB/FBM SMBus Controller - 266A)

4 - LPC Interface (Intel® 82801FBM LPC Interface Controller - 2641)

5 - PCI Express Root Port (Mobile Intel® 915GM/PM Express PCI Express Root Port - 2591)

6 - Express Processor to DRAM (Mobile Intel® 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML Express Processor to DRAM Controller - 2590)

7 - USB Universal Host Controller (Intel® 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 2658, 2659, 265A and 265B)

8 - USB2 Enhanced Host Controller (Intel® 82801FB/FBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 265C)

9 - USB Root Hub x5

After going to device manager and right clicking on each and 'Update Specific Driver'. I reboot the machine and my sound and graphics both increased with no crackling from the sound and the graphics while not as fast as Windows XP was within 2-5fps of XP.

This was after a new rebuild. Go Figure. . . :?

Regards
Michael
