Is this the New "Microsofts Hard/Software.com" formerly known as Tom's?? I cant remember the last time i posted or really even care. One thing i have noticed that the majority of PC experts in these forums have never saw DOS operate or windows 3.1 or even win95. Ive been reading tom's since it first started up and one reason i kept coming back was the unbiased articles and reviews (sorely missed) . In regards to Vista and its hobbyist hating agenda to kill the hobbyist sector. just remember that Microsoft is here because of the hobbyists and no other reason. dont credit yourselves with the heights microsoft has reached and when even the tallest and strongest building loses its foundation it falls inevitably.
i wont be returning to this thread because i can just imagine the level of response , LOL. but this is a call to you TOM......You started this website because you were a hobbyist like myself and you may now make a crapload of cash off this site and there's nothing wrong with that. BUT FOR GOD SAKES..... BE HONEST IN THE REVIEWS!!!!!!

I'm not convinced its bias so much as Toms has become noticable enough that suppliers are starting to pay attention to him.

Let me explain, years ago I used to read tomshardware allot back in the good old days when the debates were over MMX vs K6's and weather it was safe to buy AMD on the basis they may get pushed out of business.

Anyway at that time Toms was such as small entity that no-one (I mean big business) really paid any attention to, he could write what he wanted and if he was lucky he even got given the odd bit of hardware for free.

Anyway at around the Pentium 2's became Pentium 3's point I gave up on hardware (I was a student with no money and became more interested in writing software). So I disappeared from Toms for a long time.

Recently I have come back and am amazed at how far this site has come, I mean it, its totally un-reconigisable (both good and bad).

I think the issue is that Toms has possibly become too big, its quite an authority for enthusiasts and I suspect that the editors are now given a fair bit of attention by the major suppliers.

People given you attention, listening to your comments and feeding them back up the tree will change your perspective, not because you have sold out but because you are likely to find common ground and have more time devoted to showing you the positives.

Add to this the risks associated with bad articles you can not backup (this is these individuals living) and you hit a scenario where most of the time you are writing about the positives because you believe in them and when you are writing about the negatives you are toning it down to maintain the relationships that give you access to the hardware, documentation etc and also possibly a fear of reprisals or legal action.

Anyway one serious question when did Tom move to America? I'm sure he was in England when I was previously reading and now recent references have been to life in the US.

Very well thought-out post and I understand the dilemma with popularity Tom has achieved. I remember when I was in the USAF, my co-workers and I would take the really cool information with overclocking our processors that Tom posted; it was so cool that we were tinkering with our hardware…
Right now I have a dilemma of my own, I do not like what MS is doing with Vista. I must be just getting older and would rather just tinker with my hardware and software like the old MS-DOS days. Things have changed and some of the posters on this site are so rude. I’ve been called uneducated among others…

Thank you for your informative and enlighten post.

EDIT: Like you I was away for several years and just checked in from time to time, I do not know when or where Tom move to or from… I still like the hardware tinkering...

well I for one,, started in computers punching holes in cards and
sending them to local state Univ for overnight processing and
then fixing the errors the next day till it was right,,
used to program in assembly and basic,, assembly was easier
in a way ,,, but I read the reviews etc with a jandiced eye
linux, Windows or Mac os have come a long way,, but the price
we have paid is that tinkering has become much harder unless
your a cracker,,( not hacker which is not always bad)
