I have a question and it seems i cant find a good enough answer. I have a P4 Prescott 478 800 FSB asus mother board gig of pc3200(2-512) everything running at 800 FSB. I was thinking about getting a 2.6 Duo with 1066 FSB and new MB. Would i really notice a diff in performance while gaming? I mean my system now runs great i have no issues its smooth and i love it. I was just thinking about get a new system with some new stuff like pci express and so on. BUt i dont wanna spend all that money and not see a very noticeable difference. Any input on this will be greatly appreciated. Here is all my specs...

P4P800-E Deluxe
3.2 P4 800 FSB
74Gig Rapture 10,000 RPM HD
1Gig PC 3200 2 512 PC3200
Nvidia 6800 GS
SoundBlaster Audigy2 ZS

Thank YOU

If it's smooth and you love it, then there's no reason to upgrade.

I only upgrade when things start to become a PITA.

Exactly my thoughts.

the only reason i would upgrade for is to get a new gfx card and pci-e. if you are haing no problems as the other say, there is no need to upgrade.

intruth that is a pretty good system still and if oyur are satisfied with the performance you get then stick with it.

is there any games in particular you are wanting that your current config may not run well?

You will see quite a large diffrence. Even if you went with the slowest of the C2Ds it would run faster then an old Prescott. Basicly you will see the performance of the C2D and wonder how you thought everything was nice and smooth with that old P4.

This is a case where ignorance really is bliss. If you are happy with your current setup, keep it for a while longer. Upgrades will only be faster and cheaper as time passes.

Just think, if you upgrade it later, even in 6 months, you'll get a faster system for the same amount of cash.

Might as well keep what you've got if it's still good.

Can you elaborate?

Thanks a lot guys for your opionions. I am leaning toward leaving it all alone for the time being. I mean i play COD2 and BF2142 with no problem DiretX 7 of course because my current card will not handle DirectX9. But other than that i have little to know problems. I mean it would be nice to be able to run at all the highest setting and still get a great FPS but oh well.

Are you talking about a Nvidia 6800 GS? That's a DX9c card. It may not have the uber framerates but it can handle DX9 titles at lower resolution.

The last DX7 card was the Gforce MX whatever. Everything after that is at least 8 or 8.1 compatible.

Well, if gaming is what you're after, you'd be better off spending the money on a nicer graphics card.

Well, I hope your not thinking about the CPU frequency (3.2ghz) is gernally stating is a faster speed then for say 6300 at 1.8ghz.

You should see a difference since the C2D does more in one CPU cycle then the P4.

But besides seeing a performance difference, you are allowing yourself to upgrade to better things beside playing COD2 and BF2142 on a 6800GS.

I'm basically on the same boat, P4 northy 3.0 and the 6800GS. About the DX7 comment, your card should be running DX 9c.

i think he will hit a gpu limit before he hits a cpu limit with his config, in games it is gpu first then cpu.

Yes it will run DirectX9, i guess i worded it wrong. It just has terrible FPS at 9 i have much better game play running on 7.

Not trying to encourage holding out, but if it does what you want it to, I'd stick to what you got also.

I loved my 2.4Ghz P4 with my AIW 9700 Pro, but when the 9700 died last month, I just decided to max out my system with an HIS x1950 AGP and a 3.4Ghz P4 and an extra GB of ram. This will probably be good for another 5 years or longer if nothing breaks. Directx10 is the only downfall, but AGP cards should have a few offerings in that also in the near future.

You are completely correct to hold out for 5 more years.
