hi, there has been alot of talk concerning AMDs Barcelona chip, and on paper it all seems sound. The chips should in theory be great, however how come i havent seen any benchmarks ect, when intel showcased C2D way before it release, will this be another "in theory", or "on paper" victory, and intel retain its crown. or will it actually smash intel to peices.

so is there any proof?

and no im not a fanboy in either camp, just want proof

I guess then you should send AMD an email. No one here knows.

thats not such a bad idea

You want proof you say? Well, so do I. The problem is that there currently is no proof.

The only thing I can speculate is this: At the rate AMD stock price is sinking, if it truly is better than sliced bread they would be sampling it and benches would be everywhere by now. If for nothing else to give investors confidence and prevent a further slide in the stock.

If it comes out and rocks the world, I will seriously question why they did not release samples sooner. Then I will add another checkmark to the "incompetence" column for AMD senior mgmt.

yeah, maybe its not so great, or maybe they just dont want intle to releasing anything better

The stock price won't change the fact that wafers take more than two months to make and go to packaging. The demos are set to happen April 22nd when R600 is demoed.

You want the proof? You can't handle the proof!

Do we really need another pointless thread/poll comparing CPU's, especially when one of them isn't out yet?

.. just my tuppence worth

OK, here is the reason their is no benchmarks.

Barcelona is a server chip that will be released soon. AMD generally is not going to do benches on a server chip and that is all they have talked about performance wise so far.

The Desktop Kuma/Agena (I think that is the Barcelona desktop chips) will not be released until later in the fall or early spring. Not even AMD knows when they will be switching over to produce those because it depends on the demand of the Barcelona Server chips. It would be pointless to release Benchmarks on a product you haven't even ramped yet and they probably don't even have the final release candidates for the desktop segment yet anyway.

This leads me to believe that it will be Late Fall or Early Spring before you will be able to get your hands on an AMD desktop Barcelona type thingy. AMD has no Idea what the competition will be then because Intel plans more releases. They will bench it close to the release date to not hurt the release by bad press because they rushed it and also a bench closer to the day it goes on sale will affect sales more.

Barcelona will do great in the server market most likely, I would expect AMD to leverage this with their limited production. They already got knocked for poor product mix in the last two quarters.

Baron, I admire the restraint with which you handled that.

Where is proof anyway, last I saw he was posting in the raid 0 thread.

@ the OP : Believe me man, as soon as we have benches on barcelona, they will be all over the place. You won't be able to miss them.

I have a thought for you: stock options... Senior management doesnt get paid by salary, man. Yeah, they get one, but that's not where the money is. This has nothing to do with AMD in paticular, but the corrupt business world that I live in today. They are definately LETTING their stock slide. They are letting all the bad stuff gain ground and let the stock fall... why? That's easy...
CEO to board: hey, look, our stock is slipping... I know, but I bet that we can turn it around in the next quarter or two.
Board: Oh great one, how will you do this?
CEO: Easy, just trust in our strategic plan.
Board: How do we know that you will make good on your promise?
CEO: Easy, just grant me stock options that strike at some (seemingly) ridiculous price above what it is now and I'll make it happen.
Board: Well, we dont see how its possible, but ok... sounds good!

This doesnt happen you say? The board can't be that stupid and gullible and under the CEO's direction? If you are asking yourself these questions, ask yourself another: WHY THE HELL DID AMD BUY ATI THEN???? (this was about as good of a deal for AMD shareholders as Time Warner buying AOL)

truth, not proof, lol, also, there isnt an option for "evenly matched" why? i think they will be.

theres always gonna be a better chip, it keeps industry moving, even if it only down to pice v permance

The thing is, a lot of Barcelona's numbers are on paper... well, all of Barcelona's numbers are on paper. I'm going to go out on a limb and believe the data that AMD has posted on Barcelona. The only problem I see is that the people over hyping Barcelona aren't AMD, (not even BaronMatrix is over hyping Barcelona) are people like Shakirou that take the numbers that AMD has reported and twisted them by ignoring the caveats, or not reposting the entire statement. Statements like "40% better than Clovertown in selected floating point (or what have you) applications" and "80 better than K8 in Oracle" get shortened to "40% better than Intel" and "80% faster than K8". Technically, its not outright lying or falsifying information, but it is distorting the truth, which can be even worse.

Edit: Typo and formating.

No one knows, but one thing is for sure.
Its going to be a great year with cheaper prices on both sides.

well, most people here wouldnt be getting a barcelona chip, considering that it is for servers... agena and kuma are the desktop counterparts, and are said to be similar, though.

this is my avatar becaujse that is the current CPU in my system, it is C2D scecific, not general intel, it is also here, as the C2D line is immensely immpressive. IF it was in the other camp it woul

d be a AMD logo

8O it takes 2 months to make a waffer thing???? wow :?

Reply to papi4baby

Waffers take twice as long to manufacture than their wafer counterpart, due to the extra f.
