It's the phrase I'd been waiting for: "That machine is so slow!" my wife said as she came into the livingroom.

"Really, did you know I could upgrade the whole thing for less than £20 per month?" I replied.

"Over how long?"

"Three years."

"Go on then." :D

So, the budgetry committee has agreed that I can upgrade the old machine, but on the proviso that I get it on credit, payed off over three years. I know, I know, it'll cost more in the long run, but this was an easier sell that £600 up front! I'm therefore restricted to getting all my parts from one site: www.dabs.com

Here's what I came up with. I'm aiming to overclock it substantially once its bedded in. I'd value your opinions on the components:

Antec Neo HE ATX 500W PSU
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 1.8GHz S775
Gigabyte S775 Intel 965P ATX GLan 8CH Audio ATX
2 x Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 160Gb S300
Gigabyte Radeon X1950Pro 256MB DDRIII PCIE Dual DVI
Corsair Memory TWIN2X2048-6400 2x1GB 240-Pin DIMM XMS2-6400 CL5

I'll reuse my existing ATX case, mouse, keyboard, speakers, monitor and OS.

Looks do-able in terms of upgrading & overclocking. Make sure the mobo is S3 or DS3.

Looks good dude. Sorry about your credit situation. newegg offers some monthly payment stuff just not over 3 years.

Newegg don't deliver outside the US, do they? I'm from the UK.

I'd rather pay it upfront and shop around for the cheapest prices, but that didn't go down quite so well. Something about nappies that needed buying, or something. :?

Didn't life used to be so much simpler?

Watchout about your OS; if its OEM, you are not legally allowed to reinstall it. Retail versions, yes. Good luck!

That all looks good.
Dabs tends to charge a little extra on all prices which is bad, but the credit equals that out.
I would try scan.co.uk as they offer a 6 month credit (yes I know there a big difference between 6 months and 3 years).
But as there prices are lower so you would be able to pay it back sooner.
Although I don't see why you couldn't earn £600+ during the summer, in a cafe or pub.

Anyways a good setup which should last sometime, although you may want to wait for the 8 series to drop in price before you buy.

I have OEM Windows XP Pro x86 running on about 5 different computers. The same copy. What, are the M$ police going to show up at your house and kill you in your sleep?

According to your license agreement that you made with Microsoft by simply installing it the first time, it says, paraphrased, that your OEM copy of Windows is tethered to your motherboard. I am very sure that there are so many ways to get around, and Microsoft doesn't care enough to start a lawsuit on a guy who only "stole" 4 copies of the software...

Nothing to stop me from doing the same exact thing as you do. Call em up, lie about it, and it's all good.

Note: I may be a little wrong about the exacts, but OEM is one-license per computer for system-builders. That's why it's half the price of Retail.
