I have problems getting connections to the internet with my PC. I'm using Windows XP and a Linksys WAG54G.
My defaults where tot obtain an automatically generated IP-address from my linksys. But suddenly that stopt. I got a message instead "something like: low functionality on this connection".
From research on the internet, i did find out that I didn't get any IP_address, because Windows is providing a IP-address which indicates, no ip-adress obtained??.
This problem I could not solve. So I choose for the sollution to take a fixed IP-addres. And not to use the DHCP facility on the Linksys. This works, but every day, when I start the computer. I need to give a new IP-address, because the previous ip-numbers will not connect to the internet any more.
Gateway Linksys : 192.168.1.1. My PC IP-address 192.168.1.###
Where I have to increase ### everytime when I start my PC (from boot or sleep mode).

My first impression was it's a a problem with the Linksys. I even updated the firmware to the latest versions. But other hardware connected to the linksys (Voip-phone, PS2) are working fine.

I'm using WiFi to connect the PC to Linksys, because when I use the cable a have even more problems.
Using the cable gives me a warning every minute or so "cable not connected". My light to indicate cable connect is off. But then this light turns ON, data-light is blinking and I have some internet connection (very slow). Then al light are off and a message "cable not connected" is visible in the system tray and every thing is repeated.

I'm realy confused where to look for problems; XP or Linkssys router. I'm using Zonealarm 6.5.737.000. I've checked for virusses, etc.
When I use Windows XP Netdiagnostics, I got things like;

turn DHCP back on, then post the results of run->cmd->ipconfig/all

Turn off ZoneAlarm, it's firewall will wreck havic on your network.

Strangly enough i have internet connection (WiFi) But I don't know how. I thought it was using gateway 192.168.1.1.!!

When I try to turn DHCP on (windows machine), I got a message like :
This connection has no or limited connection possibilities. Probably you don't have internet connection.

To configure my adsl (to turn DHCP on) I need to go to 192.168.1.1 but the machine is unavailable (dead ping).

Killing ZoneAlarm firewall is a bad idea!

You have a SPI / Firewall built into the router, so you can kill it for testing purposes. Or at the least add a rule to allow all local traffic. ( 192.169.1.1 - 255.255.255.0) .

You are going to have to do it in order to trouble shoot.

Step 1 : Connected to my Linksys Gateway, and used the default setup (Local DHCP server enabled)
Step 2 : My TCP/IP connection for my WiFi-adapter set to automatic IP and DNS-server
Step 3 : reboot Windows XP
Step 4 : After reboot, killed ZoneAlarm, If checked on hidden processes with Sysinternals Process Explorer, see dump. (Windows-XP firewall also Disabled)

** With the above connection information, I don't have an internet connection. It is also impossible to connect locally to my LinksSys Gateway on it's default address 192.168.1.1.

The only way to get Internet connection or to see / use the LinkSys gateway is to set my TCP/IP config for the WiFi connection to Fixed IP address. This process cost me a lot of trail and error, because it doesn't always work, so I need to reset XP, try and try again.
While I'm writing this message I'm using the following config (using Wifi Connection):

Using The ETHERNET Connection (Cable) never works. I've got repeatetly the message "Cable not connected", the message dissapears, the data-led is burning, some data is transferred and then again "The cable is not connected" message.

What I find very strange, is that my LinkSys gateway, is still configured as LOCAL DHCP-server.

Any Ideas ?

A couple of things popped out at me.

WINS-proxy enabled . . . . . : YES Disable WIN

And your DNS is not pointing at the router gateway. Should be 192.168.1.1

The last computer I built had problem with the Nic drivers for NVIDA gigabit. The only ones that worked correctly was the supplied drivers and that was with the def chip set. So if this is a Nvida chipset PC, try reverting back to the drivers supplied on the cd. It worked for me.

Have you tried a direct connect to the modem ( pc to modem ). This uses a std cat5 nic cable. Now if you isp is setup to look at MAC address it may not allow you to connect if this is new pc. May require the ISP to reset its filter of clone the mac address into the router.

If you have 2 wireless cards try disabling the one not in use. Even though I have 2 on mine and they both will connect at the same time.
