Hi all.
I just got my first ever pocket PC PDA, and now I'm wondering: What is, in
you're opinion, the most essential software to install?

- Magic Button or Wisbar Advanced (freeware for _really_ closing
programs instead of minimizing)
- BetaPlayer (freeware for AVI, MPG (DivX/XviD), MP3, WMA, ...)
- Total Commander or Pocket Explorer (you guessed it: freeware)

How can you ask that without saying what you want to do? Essential is the
software that allows you to do what you want to do.

What is wrong with asking for opinions? if you read the OP's post he did
ask for our "opinions". personally I think seeing what everyone else uses
and does with their PocketPC's is a good thing !

And personally I'd have to have a database such as HanDbase -- they call it
an "information appliance", after all, but they don't supply a database.

Funnily enough I just upgraded my PPC and was thinking the same thing.
Personally the things I use constantly are:

Textmaker: www.softmaker.com
TomTom: www.tomtom.com
Journeyplan: www.journeyplan.co.uk/
PIEPlus: www.reensoft.com
RadioTimes: www.radiotimes.co.uk/pda
PCAnywhere: www.symantec.com

I'll be busy checking out all the other suggestions on this thread now!

Does this work on modern iPaqs? It says it works with ARM processors but I
thought these were Intel processors.

I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned http://www.avantgo.com/ yet.
Its one of the most used applications on my iPAQ.

Also. Pocket Quicken. http://www.landware.com/ , but of course only
for those who use Quicken on their main computer.

Intel XScale processors are ARM compatible.

It works on an iPAQ hx4700... Is that modern enough? ;-)

So far on my PPC I would have to re-install the following if I have to do a
hard reset

Pocket Breeze http://www.sbsh.net/products/pocketbreeze/ <-- absolutely
can't live without this, makes the on screen calendar much more useful
Pocket Money www.microsoft.com/money
Pocket IRC www.pocketirc.com
Pocket Feed (rss)
http://www.gotdotnet.com/Workspace [...] 561c33b69b
Aim http://www.aol.co.uk/aim/wince/index.html
Microsoft Reader www.microsoft.com/reader

Some items that could go back on later:
Pocket Hosts http://www.zimac.de/cestuff.htm (resolves DNS to IP's for my
VPN connections)
PHM RegEdit http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/
CHM Reader.net http://www.freewareppc.com/authors [...] bury.shtml
