Has anyone noticed the sudden drop on these dual core AM2 cpus?

Sweet deal. I assume they are in anticipation to the new core2 releases and future price drops of the core2 processors.

The price drops make me a little sad...I could pick up a 5600+ for what I paid for my 4200+ last summer...

so will these pricce drops be tangible THAT DAY, or will it take a week or so to get into the egg

Oh dear....
Think I am going to throw up 8O
Just to think when I started to buy parts for my new upgrade (hope to have it power up the first time this weekend) I was pretty tempted to get the 6000+ but decided not to, instead I dropped 230 (already dropped the day after I ordered a few bucks) on the 5200+

Looks like if I waited I coulda got the 6000+ for the a few bucks more then I paid for the 5200+

Dang. Oh well

Next quarter Intel's 2xxx series dual cores debut.

The 1.8 ghz 2 x 1 meg cache part will be $79 and it should outrun an x2 3800, likely be +/- a 4200+ on the benchmarks.

$72 for an x2-3800 may be too high actually.

$238 for an x2 6000 is way out too if an E600 is going to be $168

Seems to me there are two possibilities here.

1) Barcelona really rocks

or

2) AMD is dead meat.

I'm not in the USA right now or I'd help ya out. But just get any of these guys to receive it for you and then they can just stick a $5 airmail stamp on it and you'll receive it in a week or two!

That is unless they steal it and rip you off!

Man I wish I had relatives or something there. All I've got are you guys and I haven't even met any one of you so what a risk it would be. I'd do it though.

Where are you traveling to this time? tsunami-like wheather hit durban this weekend (sounds worse than it is). My soon to be parents in law went there on holiday today...

Hmm... tsunami weather... that's a new one, but you may be onto something new! Wanna write a paper about it for The Seismic Meteorology Journal?

I'm in Canada for the next week. Visiting 1Tanker. Unfortunately he warned me that he had sent his teenagers out of town for the week so that I wouldn't pervert them. Took a lot of the fun outta the trip!

I'm sure that if you can talk any of the more upstanding THGers they wouldn't rip you off. There's a lot of guys here that are ubertrustworthy!

Reply to CaptRobertApril

Wish I was living in canada/usa to be able to visit you guys and all that.

I wouldn't really call it tsunami it's more like VERY high tides. (about 50 meters past the normal shoreline).

I have no problem trusting you or some of the other regulars. I just didn't really chat as easily to the others like with you so I don't know how the trust factor would be there towards me...Anyhow, I'll let you know when I have some dough and want a processor. How much is your cut gonna be?

Reply to Dade_0182

I'm pretty sure that some of the forum regulars (don't need to name 'em... you know who they all are) would be up for it. As for me, I'd do it for nuthin' and even throw in the stamp, but I won't be back in the ol USofA for a little while. There are lots of nations that require armed coercion to be FREE!

Get used to them high tides! When almost 20% of the Arctic icepack melted, that water didn't just go into Evian bottles! 8)

Reply to CaptRobertApril

I don't mind waiting a while. It'll give me time to save up for an even better rig...

As for the tides of darkness (couldn't resist, I just had to), I'm not that concerned as I don't live near the coast.

Reply to Dade_0182

I'll tell ya... I wouldn't buy a top of the line new rig today even if my San Diego decided to go off to SeaWorld and never come back. I'd make do with a second-hand Sempron/Centrino POS if I had to until the real goodies come out in a few months!

I wonder if either of the Duopolists are working on Global Warming CPUs that function underwater?

global warming, I think you're on to something.

Like I said, I'm only planning on upgrading for myself around christmas. Then the hype/high prices should be over.

Oh yeah, by the end of the calendar year, I can certainly foresee all sorts of 45nm goodies going out the door at garage sale pricing. Just the thought of a 2.9 GHz Penryn Quad at US$299 makes me salivate more than Pavlov's mutt.

I really hate to stretch the poor ol 3700 that far into the future, but it's gonna be well worth it! Hopefully the price of RAM will continue to dwindle down to around US$50/GB. Imagine that. A dual socket board, two Quads and 4GB RAM and change back from your thousand dollars! HOT DAMN!

Reply to CaptRobertApril

Do you wanna kill me or something? If I won't die from the heart attack of just thinking of that then it'll have to be from the shock I'll get from drooling all over my keyboard.

ATM value ram goes for anything above $133/GB here by me. That is always the big burner in my pocket and why I haven't gotten more than my 1GB...

I'll import that as well

Reply to Dade_0182

Jack: 30% is a real nice percentage. Should make buying all those gobs of RAM much easier on the ol' pocketbook! Since it seems like I'm purchasing in Q3 at the earliest, I might opt for 8GB after all!

Dade: Check out the last minute flight sites. I'm sure you can find some ultra cheapo flights to NYC. You might wanna connect out of the UK as they have some dropdead cheap flights there. Globespan is especially good. They'll fly you from London to the States return for about $300 and that's all taxes and fees included. The money you save on a rig will likely equal the price of your flight, and you'll get a vacation for free!

@1Tanker, Haven't thought of it like that but that is some damn good reasoning, coz vista runs bearly on 1GB and with all the demand it only makes sense. I can see the ram price going up with SP1 for all the people who'll jump into vista then as well. my 2 cents

Reply to Dade_0182

I dunno. All the sales figures I've seen (including recent comments from Ballmer himself) show that the takeup on Vista so far is somewhat comparable to the market penetration of Amiga OS!

So, exactly how far are you from the Ambassador Bridge? And don't worry. You don't have to bring an armed escort to go into the RenCen area. In daytime anyway!

There are so many easy ways for Canucks to buy from NewEgg and ilk via US-based mailbox dropoffs, reshippers, etc. that it is absolutely nuts to pay high prices like that.

2X1GBI do, and do find Canada Computers cheaper, but NCIX and Direct Canada end up being as cheap, or cheaper for me. They are in BC, Can.Comp. is in Toronto...near me....so i have to pay 14% tax if buying in Ontario...6% if i buy from BC. :D

Reply to 1Tanker

Yeah, but check out this Corsair from NewEgg. US$159 after rebate doesn't compare well with CDN$259 (US$223) after similar rebate. It's still Canuck Ripoff Time.

I've always wondered why some Canuck doesn't set up a shop in PEI so they can sell to most of the country PST-free and then just act as a direct importer from NewEgg from a handler in Maine. I'm sure that the fine Northerners would be more than happy to kick in 10% fully net to get that stuff.

Let's take the example of 1Tanker buying this RAM from an Ontario etailer:

US$223
+US$31.22 GST/PST
+US$10 Shipping (Est.)

Total US$263.22

Now if the buy is from the hypothetical PEI etailer:

US$159
+10% Vigorish
+US$9.54 GST
+US$10 Shipping (Est. PEI to ON)
+US$10 Shipping (Est. NewEgg to Maine)
+US$5 Handling (Est. Maine to PEI)

Total US$209.44

That's over a 25% savings to the customer and that still allows the PEI etailer to make a tidy 10% triplenet profit for doing nothing but moving boxes.

Now you might say, hell, for a bit of RAM it aint worth it, but start saving 25% on a full-blown high-end gaming system and you're talking real bucks!!!!

How nice is Charlottetown in the Spring... really? :D

I stand erected, Tanker.

Here are the revised numbers:

Ontario etailer:

US$223.00
+US$17.84 PST
+US$10.00 Shipping (Est.)
+US$13.98 GST

Total US$264.82

PEI etailer:

US$159
+10% Vigorish
+US$10 Shipping (Est. PEI to ON)
+US$10 Shipping (Est. NewEgg to Maine)
+US$5 Handling (Est. Maine to PEI)
+US$11.99 GST

Total US$211.89

Still close enough to 25% for rock and roll. And let's keep in mind that for larger orders the shipping is not going to increase proportionately so most customers will be able to save more than 25%.

Hey, Ninja! Thought you were on vacation!!! :D

Anything to do with sales taxes is a scam, except in this particular case the GST is fully paid at Canada Customs and then recovered from the end-buyer and remitted to Revenue Canada. Fully legal. Importers do that every day of the week. 8)

Even if you just wanted to take over the enthusiast segment in Canada with this import scheme, there would be some serious bucks involved! And there's nothing that the Capt. loves more than bucks... except maybe some barely legal skinny blonde buck naked!

Reply to CaptRobertApril

Well, we're glad to see ya 'round, Ninja! Thought you'd be too busy chasing around the St. Lucian girls with grass skirts around the island with a lawnmower! 8)

Yeah, it's a legal scam that you can do and stay out of Canadian jail (which I'm sure is equipped with hand-sewn cuddly quilts, private loos and plenty of Molson's)...

Actually it's not a scam at all. VAT Carousel is when VAT is collected but not paid to the Gov't. In this case the PEI etailer is paying GST on the value of the goods as they cross the border, then collecting a higher GST amount from the end user and contributing to Rev Can the exact difference. The GST is transparent from the PEI etailer's standpoint as he's just handling it for the Gov't. and eventually turning it all over.

Reply to CaptRobertApril

If this is the case then Rev Canada is getting payed GST from both ends and they are the ones scamming people.

Rev Can exists to scam the taxpayer. It's in their charter. But here is how it works in a hypothetical buy:

Ontario enduser buys $100 worth of hw from PEI etailer of stock on hand. Enduser pays $106.
Etailer keeps $100.
Etailer sends $6 to Mr. Harper.

Ontario enduser buys $100 worth of hw from PEI etailer who gets it from NewEgg through Maine.
Enduser pays $106.
Etailer pays $90 to NewEgg.
Etailer pays $5.40 GST at Customs.
Etailer marks it up $10.
Etailer pays $0.60 GST to Rev Can in quarterly sales tax remittance.

Bottom line, Etailer always gets paid $100 net and Rev Can always gets $6 on the $100 but all from the enduser. It's just how it's broken up in the importation process that's weird. But it all comes out in the wash at the end.

You're on, dude! In your honour we'll call it DaClan International Computer Sales!

Here's how I see the corporate hierarchy:

Ninja is President, CEO and Resident Deity.
Tanker is PEI Pointman. (Maybe change that to New Brunswick to avoid the ferry ride)
Verndewd is Resident Evangelist
The Capt. is Human Resources Exec, specializing in bedding... er... hiring all cute young female employees.

Now all we need is a couple of nimble-fingered professional posters to scour the various tech forums for int'l enthusiasts bemoaning the prices in their country and offer them a boilerplate pitch.

All kiddin' aside (and I know that's difficult coming from me) but this is a helluva way to make serious money. I'm in SERIOUSLY as well! Who else is up for it?

That seems more likely, as Vista spreads, so will profits for memory makers... not much room to drop much, at least on quality name brands.
