Jornada 568
Forum PDA : Windows Mobile - Jornada 568

I've had a Jornada 568 for a couple of years and up to now its been working
fine. Now, for no apparent reason it is having various problems. They
include:
1. It hangs as soon as I take it out of the dock. If I put it back in the
dock, it re-boots itself.
2. It seems mostly ok when it is in the dock but has trouble when trying to
maintain a connection with ActiveSync.
Other points:
1. I tried soft resets several times but they don't seem to fix anything.
2. I did a hard reset which also didn't fix anything.
3. I restored from my last backup (which was taken prior to when the
problems began) and that didn't fix anything.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Dan

Once you do a hard reset what exactly does it do?
If the problems crop up after the hard reset but before you
sync that would indicate problems with the unit itself.

After a hard reset it worked for about a minute before hanging.
If I then press the power key on the front of the box it reboots.
Is it possible that the battery is really dead even though it says that the
battery is fine?

Should have read "charging connector"

The primary suspect would likely be the battery.
If the problems don't exist while in the cradle or when connected to an
external charger, I would at least persue replacing it... the age is
such that end of battery life would be expected.
The other suspect would be the battery connector... on the 568, it is
simply a circuit board edge connector and it could be suffering from
wear. This would be easy to spot with a strong magnifier and good light
source.

Just to expand upon what Bev said regarding connectors. Inspect closely for
oxidation on them (it will look like a black dirt film of sort). I used to
work in a place where we cleaned them off with a pencil eraser. If you
gently rub any visible oxidation with the eraser it should come off.
If you stored the unit for a long period of time with the battery on it,
they both might have oxidation on the contacts.
The battery also probably needs replaced after a few years. That's a good
route also. You can check it's potential with a volt/ohm meter if you really
want to go that far.
Good Luck.

Any idea what the voltage should be?

No, sorry. It was probably printed on the battery at one time.
I think it's ohms, not volts you would want to measure. An older battery
should slowly loss the ability to hold the potential (ohms) to drive the
voltage. (something like that, it's been a while)
I found two pages for you:
http://www.answers.com/topic/lithium-ion-battery
http://unit.villanova.edu/support/ [...] ycling.pdf
The first one is more general. The second has some real fancy "Hi tech"
charts.

i had exactly the same problem. After months of putting up with what i
suspected was a cracked circuit board, i sourced the special
screwdriver you need, and opened up the unit: all it was was a loose
screw holding the cae on! i didn't even need to open the unit.
Since then [4 months ago], not one self-reboot!
Cheers,
Physhure
