Remember the old saying, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me"? As it stands, we've been fooled more times than that, so I no longer trust anything that AMD says. I just get irritated about it. Oh well, such is my opinion.

Of course, not everyone remembers that old saying...

Dude,

Nice nick :)

Gotta be a guy to have that nick!

I really do not see how gaming piracy is that high...  This is another of those smoke screens the RIAA, MPAA, and software vendors put up to make things sound much worse than what they are...

I like the way Atari handled the release of UT2K4...  A fully playable/enjoyable demo (with online play enabled) that allowed people to play before they buy...  I knew people that waited in line for that release..  I waited on Amazon..  Most people I know purchased that game because of the demo and the content offered in the DVD versions.

Hopefully a platform does not get blamed out of existence because of a rear padded number that they are throwing up!!

Now see LordPope the Married guy above gave a good post without an underlying whine about AMD!!

All Intel is doing Is grabbing as much from AMD as they can before it turns on them;when it turns its going to look like sparta had 1000 men and slaughtered a million persians.

Vern, I really hope you're right about that. Fact is, if AMD stock sinks low enough, I might go ahead and reinvest some gambling money in them. At the same time, with all the anouncements and delays that AMD has had, if the Spartans were like them, they would have shown up at the pass after the Persians had already gone through it.

:)

Glad you liked the Nick, I have to admit it made me chuckle when I thought of it while I was pricing items for a new build.

You are could be right about the inflated estimates on piracy.

I have read that it is a much larger problem  in Eastern Europe and Asian countries but even if it is half of the estimates that is a good chunk of profits.

In the end the loss is all passed on to the legal consumer anyway.

yeah...the AMD SPARTANs would hve gotten to the pass...looked back over their shoulders...and saw Sparta on Fire

Sailer, don't be too hasty unless they straighen out their finances over the next six months they could go chapter 11 next year and wipe out the investors but they won't disappear.

AMD vs  INTEL

is identical to   the movie 300

INTEL is the Perseian army

AMD is Sparta

sure Sparta's 300 did well against unspeakable odds

but in the end ...they fell

That's dumb and shortsighted, did you watch to the end of the movie?  Sure the greeks are outnumbered 3 to 1, but, those are good odds for a Spartan.

Actually, the Spartans were outnumbered closer to 500 to 1, and they still did serious damage to the invading Persians. Kind of makes you wonder, what if the Spartans had 400 men? As it was, just like the men at the Alamo, their seemingly suicidal action gave time for the rest of the Greeks to get organized and win the war.

I meant at the end of the movie, with the monk from Van Helsing with 1 eye, says 3 against 1 or something like that, unless I totally didn't hear him being right in front of the damn speakers at the worst seats in the whole theatre (had to look almost straight up, neck still hurts).

C’est magnifique, mais ce n’est pas la guerre.

If you'll be arsed to go earn some history, the reason the Spartans lost at the Battle of Thermopylae, was not because they we're under manned, but because of the Malian traitor, Ephialtes. They had ideal strategic position from early on. The narrowing of the pass, combined with the superior tactics of the phalanx, allowed them to take on greater numbers with relative ease. If it wasn't for Ephialtes telling the Medo Persians about the goat path that overlooked the pass, the Spartans would've never had to deal with a multi fronted battle, and wouldn't have been outflanked.

Intel will have no reason to drop prices of its mid to high end with AMD gone  and VIA not yet ready to step in.

will HIGH COST pc's after AMD is gone...run all the gamers to the consoles?

I will just go back to my pentium 2 400Mhz, play starcraft, half life, red alert, unreal tournament, ahh the good ole days..

On a slightly different note, both my son and myself have been dissapointed in a lot of the games produced in the past couple years. To some extent, we feel that PC gaming is failing anyway. Too many games come out in less then beta form. I mean, the first thing that happens when we buy a game is to start loading all the patches we can find, and then sometimes find so many bugs that we loose interest and go find something else to do. And then there are the games in which the bugs never get fixed. Starcraft, etc were pretty playable out of the box. Wish there had been a Starcraft 3, similar to Warcraft 3. Though Warcraft 3 had a few things we didn't like, we thought it was fairly good overall. And, after all, Starcraft: Broodwars set a stage for a next episode, one that never got made.

Its a shame that Blizzard stands alone in the PC gameing market place. How many copies of the Burning Cusade sold ? I know I have bought just about every blizzard game ever made. I think if more companies followed there lead then things would be alot better !!

"i am dealing in some what if scenarios we all need to be preparing for..."

What about preparing for an asteroid impact, the return of Michael Jackson, and an attack by robot ninja shark people, perhaps all at the same time?  So much to prepare for, so little time.
You do realize that a large portion of humanity is actually concerned about not having clean, safe drinking water, or finding enough to eat, or not having their children die from one of a myriad of preventable diseases because they can't afford or don't have access to the treatments, or just being hacked to death with machetes because they speak a certain language or go to a certain church?
I'm glad you're working on the big answers to the problems of our times.

AMD's not falling, stumbling around blindly in dimly lit room maybe, but this always goes in cycles - its Intel's turn.  If Barcelona and it's subsequent desktop CPU's fail to perform *as they state* AND R600 can only compete at the lowend against Nvidia's DX10 parts - THEN there may be some cause for worry.

How will it affect gaming?  Not one bit.  A good chunk of serious gamers are also enthusiasts, mild or hardcore - we'll go where the bang for the $$$ is and if I can get 120FPS on an AMD proc for half the cost of 180FPS on an Intel proc, I'd buy the AMD proc...as it sits if Barcelona derevitive desktop CPUs perform as touted, my guess is that they will not be able to price themselves in competiton with Intel on a $$$/performance basis, so the better bang for the $$$ will still fall to Intel.

As I sit - I'm happy with what I have...given that the bulk of my system cost me $0.00, then I'm even more pleased with it....

I'm interested in seeing what they're going to come forward with - I honestly hope they can stay competitive - and I don't think it will have one bit of impact to gaming.

The lack of credible benchmarks on any front, CPU or GPU has me mystified tho, and leads me to believe that things aren't as rosy for them as they're painting things to be...

We'll just have to wait and see...

what a joke only noob would Post this -- games are ms based last i knew microsoft had nothing to do with amd. used to be ou could hardly get an apple game.

2nd intel is supperior for gaming, and has always been superior (ok amd x2 was better in 2005) for a gamer who does not want for turn off back ground programs or do multitasking music and im while gaming

what a noob post!

again, i still don't believe that AMD is as bad off as some other people seem to... however, IF they were to close their doors, that moment would be the end to more than just gaming.

i mean, i don't really see your point on SPECIFICALLY gaming, there would still be games... but it would totally cripple and destroy custom computer building. not only would the whole price-problem be an all-too true possibility, but there wouldn't be any DIVERSITY. some of you may not see that as a bad thing, but you couldn't compare processors or have arguments for which is best, everyone would have the same thing. it wouldn't be as fun.

anyway, my lil tidbit. i think i had another point or two but i remembered how hungry i am
