OK... (I'm getting to old and nearsighted for this ;-)

Results of a day's work are at http://bevhoward.com/serial.htm#PDA2K

Thanks for the work you obviously put into this. You mentioned the cabel
from Expansys. Do you know if it has all of the cables necessary for all
pinouts. Most cables are task specific and only include the connectsions
for the specific task.

I am looking to be able to perform the following from inside of a Car/Truck:
* Power - recharge
* Audio out - MP3 to stereo
* Mic in - for hands free phone use (with Audio out as well)
* Serial connection for a GPS receiver (I know there are plenty of BlueTooth
ones out there but as I can only use one device I want it for the headset as
sometimes I listen to the radio and not the stereo and would miss the call)

As an FYI the car mount from ProClipUSA.com is fantastic. I just need that
custome cable now :-)

Thanks Again,
Richard

The Expansys cable (itself) has all pin connections except Ring Detect
and possibly Carrier Detect... the RS-232 "standard" still has me pretty
confused after over two decades of use ;-)

Ironically, the only application I have ever been unable to get
functioning without "full" serial pin wiring has been activesync...
since this cable is vended as a serial sync cable, while I have not
tested it, would assume that it will have no problems based on it's
designation.

I'm also relatively sure that the cable problems you describe were not
related to the cable, but to devices that only connected gnd, tx and
rx... as the cable circuitry and/or ppc required one other pin to be
active before the circuit was activated... this, and the solution, is
described at http://bevhoward.com/serial.htm#Axim (look for red text)

Actually just sat down to begin testing between the PDA2k and gps but
anticipate no problems... famous last words ;-)

Success...

Serial communications tested and confirmed with activesync,
hyperterminal and GPS

GPS had no problem using minimal three conductor tx/rx/gnd connection
which created problems using the same with a Dell X5 serial connection.

Thanks for all of your assistance, one more question though:
* Which iMate Expansys cable are your reverring to? Do you have a part
number or description that matches with their web site description?

There are three options at expansys... a serial sync cable, a
combination usb and serial cable (which I assume is serial sync
connector) and a power adapter which does have solder lugs for all pin
connections.

There is now a picture of a "minimal" serial cable constructed out of
the power adapter at http://bevhoward.com/serial.htm#PDA2K along with
links directy to the serial and power adapters at Expansys.

After reading your replies (thank you for being so helpful) I am still
not sure that I have conveyed my desires.

I am looking for a ready made cable (preferably) that not only has all
of the pins in the connector, but has the appropriate pins soldered to
wires that I can access on the opposite end (ie: Serial, USB, Power,
etc..). There are cables that have power for USB, serial for Serial,
power for power, however I am hoping to find one that has ALL of the
following wires to the appropriate pinouts as listed below. If the
Expansys cable you are referring to has all of the pinouts soldered to a
wire so that I can strip the wires on the serial end, than that is what
I am looking for.

* Serial
* Power
* Audio out
* Mic In

My hope is that with only one connection that is attached to the car
holder (proclipusa.com) that I can perform the following simultaneously:

* Charge the device
* Listen to MP3’s on car stereo
* Listen and talk while on the phone (hands free where I will put a
mic somewhere in the upper console but use car speakers for output
through stereo)
* Access GPS device through serial connection instead of Bluetooth.
<<

None that I know of... the serial sync cable will be the closest...

As mentioned on the site, I _suspect_ that pins 1-4 contain the audio
but have not tested or verified this. Personally, I would probably
attack this need with either a wired or bluetooth headset... I would
also expect that you would run into feedback from the speakers but have
no experience with this.

Looking to a wired solution, might also opt for using the audio jack to
tap the audio to assure that the internal mike and speaker were shutdown.

I'm sort of at the end of my knowledge tank on this and was hoping to
see some input from others on the audio options as well as wiring into a
handsfree mode.
