Hi All,
I am thinking about installing linux for the first time (thanks to XP) and was wondering what kind of peformance differance I can expect. Is there any benchmarks comparing apps under both OS ?

AMD TB 1000 - 266
256 133 ram
asus a7v133 (via apollo kt133a)
asus v7100 gf2 mx

I must admit I am alittle nervous, but it's time for a change.

Thanks,
-N-

Linux has the advantage in server power until you get up to Big corporate servers with 8 CPU's, where the advantage lies in NT. But If you are comparing 95/98/ME against Linux, there's no question about it, LInux kicks the *hit out of those cheap OSs. LInux runs fully in the protected mode of the x86 processor, utilizing everything Athlons and Pentiums have. Windows 9x doesn't.

What about partitioning my 30 gig drive and putting both OS on it compared to having a separate drive for Linux....any difference in speed ?

What kind of speed are you looking for or what apps are you trying to compare? Truth is you wont notice a difference for home use.

Good, thanks all.
I was just wondering as I read in other posts that there would be a perf. hit, but no mention of how much.....thanks again.

I have tested with Quake3 and UT, they run virtually just as fast under linux as under Windoze (give or take 3-5FPS in ~80FPS range). Oh, and distributed.net RC-5 cracking client runs faster under linux. Overall, I think than you don't notice performance hit, if there even is any...

I thought NT only supported upto 4 CPUs.

I think NT can go up to 32 with Datacenter it just depends on which version you get.

Pro -2
Server - 4
Adv Server - 8
Datacenter - 32
