Yeah, the huge Lian-Li's are way expensive. They are also HUGE. The TJ09 is also an ultra-expensive case coming in at no less than $250 for what I can find (BTW it happens to be my current dream case).

Just my 2 cents but I would look at getting a sata DVD burner. It helps with the air flow in the case.

I just looked at this thread and after reading 12 pages all I can say is wow this is a long one.

You keep trying to build a Raid system for a gaming computer. If it was for a file server or something like that I would agree. Her pictures can be backed up on DVD (Hence DVD burner in system) and that also covers catastrophic failure as well. Game data can be reinstalled and WoW character data is not kept local to worry about losing it.

Good raid solutions can be expensive. They can also be a headache. For her needs Raid is not needed.

Raid or no Raid she will still need a go backup schedule, and the better her backup habits the less she will need Raid.

Now don't get me wrong in the right system a Raid setup is needed.

I encourage her to learn about Raid as well as all aspects of the computer, but to experiment with something as expensive and complicated (for a novice) as Raid I do not recommend.

the first MOBO had a full 16X + 16X bandwidth when running two cards in SLI(not sure what that means and I prob. don't need it!)

SILLY-I am stuck on a case-I want aluminium, maybe 2 x 120 fans and guess screws are fine, at leaste stuff is secure. Not iterested in noisy,dust colector, that's cramped and I want it eays to work with. I have a thingy for simple and no doors. Black/silver not big on lights and stuff. :? MOBO tray would be nice, and if I could find an combo with decent Power supply already that would help too!

Wow this topic exploded....

We have been upgrading our network to "n" and all hell broke loose (But it does finally work)... so sorry i did not respond for so long!

Anyways... It is interesting how the HP debacle played out considering what happened to my boss was pretty much the same. But at least that is taken care of. And I also agree, forget hubby and DIY! If anything it is a great bonding experience for you and your son.

I concur with Hergie on the bigger hard drive, but why not just get two big ones? If you are going to budget 1800 for a DIY system, this should not be that big a deal. This way everyone is happy! Make one drive a photo and video (and back up) and keep one just for your games.

as for the case... I like all that are suggested (of course, I have no hands on experience, only reading on them) but from my experience, it would be nice to make sure that it has a motherboard tray. They are quite handy!

Another piece of advice... if you want to save on shipping, get the case from a local pc store (if the price is close) and the overall shipping should hopefully go way down.

Finally, when using newegg, always keep an eye on the COMBO button. Sometimes you can get some real good stuff at a good bargain and without trading any quality.

Recommending a RAID config to ANY new builder is kinda futile.. As I know of some supposedly seasoned builders that run into difficulty on setup..

Sure it could go easy and we could probably walk her through it... But it also may become a nightmare. Especially when talking about things like re-building a drive back into the array upon failure.

I think a Single or Dual disk setup (not in raid) is reasonable for a first build.

Especially considering the first build in this case is someone really just starting to learn.. Nothing against you Kat, we all have to start somewhere.. Would be nice if we could be instant experts like some of the folks in these and other forums

It is a costly and stupid build. I have seen plenty of first time system builders ruin hard drives with a bad Raid setup. With the business that I am in I have also seen SATA Raid systems fail because of a loose cable due to vibration. A simple snap in cable cured that but the "Newbie" wasted weeks trying to troubleshoot a problem that he had no idea could happen.

For me Raid 0, 1, 5, 10 are all easy but that is because that is my job. For a beginner it isn't so easy. A good back up schedule and habits will serve her much better.

I feel that an E6400 is fine for your build. If at a later time your computer takes on some heavier duties then you can upgrade (Most importantly you will know how to upgrade). The build as you have it looks good. If you wish 2 optical drives then that is you decision. If you get 2 optical drives make sure that both are either E-IDE or SATA (Preferably SATA) but use the same interface.

I don't remember seeing any SATA DVD Rom’s but then I haven't looked for them either. SLI mode is if you run 2 video cards at the same time, so if you feel that you will not be doing that then you could look for a motherboard that has only one PCI-e x16 channel on it. But the motherboard that you have is very good and will allow for future improvements and SLI if to decide to go that direction later.

As far as a new OS, I am a sticker when it comes to licensing agreements and so I buy a new OS for each system but that is also a personal choice everyone has to make for them selves.

I'm with Ches on the RAID issue, IMHO this is one extra headache that Kat doesn't need to face on something she's not familiar with.

I think her new "skill set" would be better enhanced by learning how to burn the photos and files she doesn't want to lose to CD's or DVD's.

Most CD's and DVD's have a shelf life of at least five years, on average that is around two years longer than most hard drives last.

Kat,

I agree with Jonny regarding the mobo, sound and DVD drive. Since it would seem that the less you spend on this the better off you will be, I think onboard sound will be just fine, and SLI mobo is overkill and unnecessary at this point, I doubt you'll get the bang for your buck and SLI vid card installation can be as problematic as RAID'ing drives.

One optical drive (DVDRW) is reall all that is needed, if it won't install or run your games there is a problem with the drive or the software (in most cases).

With that being said, I hope all your parts arrive in working condition and your build goes without any screaming or bleeding.
