Hello

I need an Rugged Pocket PC
especially one whith an enhanced temperature band
(we want to use it in cars and trucks)

a range from about -10° to 40 ° Celsius should be enough.
(In Fahrenheit this would be about 10 to 110)

Can somebody recommend some devices (or companies)?
Because I lost the overview when I search through the web :-/

Norbert,

Take a look here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmo [...] /emea.mspx
There are several units available that hopefully will fit your need.

Don't discount yet the posibility of using a more standard PPC in a good
case, such as an otterbox 2600, 3600 or 1900. The cost savings (pda
w/armour case vs ruggedized PPC) is more than substantial.

I checked this possibility but
i need a good temperature range not a waterproof, acidproof... case.
This is also a problem because the rugged devices are normally much
bigger then the normal one -> I get problems howto place the stuff!

Small, battery powered heater in the case, to keep the cold out ? The
otterboxes are fairly well sealed so it should be possible to keep
near-ambient inside them ;-))

Still cheaper than the $800 premium for a military style ruggedised
low temperateure device...

I have no specific recommendations. But you might look at:
http://www01.giscafe.com/magazine/ [...] wsletter=1
http://www.cewindows.net/wce/30/pocketpcruggedcomp.htm

I just used google (http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search) to
look up
rugged
in microsoft.public.pocketpc and got 134 hits. I took a quick look and
think you'll find some useful leads, although I didn't see temp specs.
When I changed the search string to
rugged temperature
I got 2 hits. One is this thread. I particularly like the other one
(well, it's from me:). I followed my own suggestion and changed the
string to
temperature
and got 65 hits. I didn't check them.

With a little more effort, I found a 8-14 Jan 2003 thread called "Need
PDA to work in cold weather???" in comp.sys.handhelds

I included a long list of rugged Windows CE handhelds in my 21 April
2005 contribution to a thread called "Looking for special material" in
microsoft.public.pocketpc. I don't know which are specifically good in
extreme temperatures.

A year or so ago, I saw a PBS show about exploring a mountain ridge in
Antarctica. Among other tasks, one person took a GPS reading on the
summit that was their target. The handheld used for that reading had a
case with a lot of yellow and a )( shape. So I _think_ it was a Timba
Tec. I know it worked in the cold.

Hi

I dont need especially low tempratures (-10 ° isn't that cold)

I need an pda which will work even after lying in a car for 6h without
any sun cover!
You can measure temp up to 60°C in such situations!

But nevertheless
Thanks a lot for the links and information.

You might want to think about taking a normal PDA and putting it in a simple
metal case.
That should reflect the heat perfectly well, be smaller and cost less than a
fully rugged PDA.
