Very promising. I have a question though: on other Mobile OSs, the war is
raging between Flash Lite and SVG. What is going on with Windows Mobile?

Did I read that right ? ActiveSync 4 DOES NOT SUPPORT WIFI SYNC ?

Surely that's a retrograde step, I know of a lot of people who really
really won't be happy with that. My suspicion is, it's to do with the
increased media player support - WMP never did do sync over Wifi, but
to blanket remove it as a feature I think needs some explanation.

Guys .... Clues ? Suggestions ? Rationales ?

Cheers - Neil

I find it worrying that:-
1) quite a few of the headings say 'For Windows Mobile 5.0-based Pocket
PCs'. I thought the distinction between Pocket PCs and Smartphones
disappeared, and software that could run on one, could run on the other?
2) there is no mention of push e-mail. Has this died - will RIM live to
fight another day?

Sounds more like 2003 Third edition rather than anything exciting.

That said, anyone know if i-mate will produce an upgrade for the SP3?

That's correct. Actuallu not Wi-Fi Sync, but Remote ActiveSync, the one
where a user connects over a network (not only Wi-Fi, but any network) to
their desktop running ActiveSync.

This is not the same as Exchange ActiveSync which is still supported.

The main reason for that seems to be security: the Remote ActiveSync is a
non-encrypted, non-authenticated solution and thus not safe.

Don't know about future plans at this stage.

there was a pre-release version of activesync 4 leaked a few weeks ago, and
it did not support wifi-sync. I had hoped it was just because it was a
Beta/Warez version, but now it sounds like it is by design. bad... very
bad !! :(

Tom,

the operator has to offer the upgrade, because he has to pay for licensing
the new OS.

Hopefully handset makers will follow Samsung's lead and give us lots of
reason to upgrade - not just the shinny new OS.

Hmm I don't really agree with theie rationale then. Let's consider my
use-case (I can only speak for myself ;-)

I have a NAT router which is quite impenetrable. Behind that is a
wired network, with a Wifi router. The WEP keys on that are
responsible for encryption of data flowing over the network, and the
PPC uses those keys quite happily.

I rotate my keys weekly to ensure that long term cracking isn't
likely (though I'm not paranoid, it's good practice).

The desktop has Zonealarm which is set up to only trust packets from
certain IPs and MAC addresses (as is the Wifi box).

So in terms of security, I think I've taken reasonable steps to ensure
the safety of my data. Which mostly is not really personal data - a
few notes, the odd calendar apppointment and so on. But of course, I'd
like to sit downstairs on the sofa, and sync up files, install
software etc as desired.

The current situation is acceptable. I do feel, personally, that MS
have really dropped a bollock here because with aiming at
inexperienced or likely-to-be-hacked users security issues, they have
cut out the useful ability to sync within a trusted network zone over
the air.

If there's no workaround, I think it's a bad move.
Cheers - Neil
