I am thinking about a new PDA and think it's time to switch from my
PalmOS Sony Clie to a Pocket PC (HP iPaq hx2755, perhaps).

Questions for the group:

How difficult is it to convert my PalmOS calendars, contacts, to-do
lists to PocketPC format?

Do I have to use Outlook on my desktop to be compatible? I do not use
Outlook and if it is incompatible otherwise, it's a deal breaker for
me.

Much thanks

You have to have Outlook, but you get a license when you buy a PPC.

I say go for it. I switched when my Tungsten T died. I'm glad I did.

Hi,
There are multiple options to convert your data from your Palm.

to add... Outlook is the default PIM on the desktop for the Windows Mobile
platform, but there are third party applications (such as intelisync) which
would allow you to sync with other PIM software.

Don't get too worried about this. I've just left being a Palm owner of
various varieties for many years, and switched to a Dell Axim X30High.
I faced all the same as you.

1. From the CD that comes with the PPC install Outlook.

2. Change your Palm hotsync to sync with Outlook. If you have
problems, reinstall the hotsync manager and use the options to use
Outlook for syncing.

3. Use your PPC CD to install Active Sync, or get the latest (3.8)
from Microsoft site. It's the probably the same version that you have
on your CD anyway.

4. Connect your fully charged PPC to the sync cradle or cable and sync
with Outlook. Make sure that "notes" are set to sync in the Active
Sync options so that your memos come across from your palm.

5. Go and enjoy a nice long drink and feel pleased with yourself.
