Some unknown background program has infected the
iexplore.exe file so that the home page CANNOT be changed
from this new default with multiple pop-up ads. Also,
the search engine cannot be saved now to MSN or Yahoo or
whatever.

My solution - physically DELETE the iexplore.exe file and
reload Internet Explorer.

Problem - can't delete iexplore.exe.

Suggestions?

If your anti-virus program hasn't flagged anything, then run a Spyware
remover such as Ad-Aware or Spybot Search & Destroy. This should correct
whatever has hijacked your browser.

In addition to other suggestions you can use the new version of SpyBot Search and
Destroy 1.3 in advanced mode/tools to lock your homepage and other controls for IE.
If you try it don't forget that you configured the options to lock it if you want to
change it at a later time. --- Steve

Have you tried to simply overwrite the file with another one of the same
version known to be good? As mentioned before, try Ad-Aware. That is an
excellent program and it's free, from Lavasoft. You can find it at
download.com
