I may have a virus on my ASUS A730 (Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition). It
no longer recognizes the SD Card (a 1.0 GB San Disk which I purchased new and
onto which I put some songs and .pdf files), and the File Explorer
spontaneously began showing an un-erasable file called, "ignore_my_docs" on
the Flash Disk, and I don't even have a Flash Disk installed. Never have.
ASUS says to do a hard reset of the unit. Quick and easy, yes, but not a
long-term solution as I fear the virus will probably hit me again in the
future. I downloaded a Symantec anti-virus for pocket PCs, but since the
unit doesn't recognize the SD Card, I'm unable to scan it for a virus. The
rest of the unit comes up clean. Any ideas?

I'd guess its the Asus.

Back up the machine.

Try a layer of sellotape on the back of the SD card first. If that
doesn't work then your way forward is a hard reset.

This behavior is normal. "ignore_my_docs" will appear under normal
circumstances. You do not have a virus. If you do not want to see it then
uncheck the "view all files" option in file explorer. In order to again
recognize your 1GB SD Card you might try formatting with a third party
utility such as Pocket Mechanic. It is not uncommon that SD Cards become
unreadable after a certain type or amount of usage. Good luck.

The "ignore_my_docs" file is there because there is no My Documents
folder. It helps the pocket apps search all files faster. Create a My
Documents folder on your storage card, do a soft reset, you should be
able to delete the ignore_my_docs file.

Your advice was right on. I was able to create a My Documents folder on the
Flash Drive, then was able to delete the ignore_my_docs file. However, now
that I understand its function more I'm not as eager to delete it. I then
deleted the My Documents folder I had just created, and voila, the
ignore_my_docs reappeared. Also, no one at ASUS mentioned doing a "soft
reset". That's exactly what was needed. It's working fine again. Thanks!

Thank you for the reply. I was comforted to hear that the ignore_my_docs
file is normal. I could not find a "view all files" option in the file
explorer to uncheck. After hearing what the ignore_my_docs file was used for
I wasn't as eager to delete it, but I was able to do so after creating an
empty My Documents folder on the Flash Disk. (I then deleted the My
Documents folder I'd just created, and the ignore_my_docs file magically
reappeared. Interesting system.) Oh, and the SD Card didn't need to be
reformatted after all. In the end what worked was a soft reset. Thanks
again for taking the time to help me out.

Thanks for taking the time to try and help me out. John G had the answer to
this one. By the way, I'm curious about your technique of putting sellotape
on the back of the SD Card. Is sellotape what I call Scotch Tape? (the
transparent stuff I use to wrap birthday presents?) Do you put it on the
back of the card and then stick it into the machine? What does that do?

It might increase the pressure on the contacts which might make a better
connection.

Yep, that's what the intention is - it's been a 'fix' for a few devices
I've seen reported- like digital cameras and mp3 players.

It also works to tighten a cell phone battery.
