Sorry to keep bothering people on this N/G but no one local can shed any
light on this problem.

I have a Jornada 568 with a Pretec 56K Compact Modem. I have set it up
exactly as described on
http://www.pretec.com/faq/compactm [...] e_2002.htm

The problem I have with it is that it doesnt try to dial out and I get the
error message
TROUBLE CONNECTING
Their is no modem at the number dialled. Verify the number and try again
etc etc etc

I have listened on an extension and all that happens is a high pitched tone
every second or so.

Other than throwing the modem away is there anything else I can try? I am
really hoping to get this thing on the internet before I start travelling.

the high pitched pulse tone is characteristic of a fax rather than a modem.

Have you confirmed that it is dialing the correct number? To test, set
up a connection with the number of a friend and confirm that the number
get;s through.

More info on the dialing issues at http://BevHoward.com/PPCDun.htm

Thanks Beverly but the modem doesnt try to dial out at all the PPC goes
through the motions buts thats all it does. I should have explained better
but the high pitch tone I am hearing is superimposed on the dial tone. I
have tried phoning my mobile but nothing happens.
I think I need new modem.

I have tried again to setup the modem on the Jornada this time with
DialupMaster and get the message,
REMOTE NETWORKING
No carrier detected.
Verify phone number and then try again.

Looks like the modem is picking up the phone but not hearing anything.

suggest loading a terminal program such as vxHPC and entering the
dialing commands manually directly to the modem before you toss it... a
starting point after starting vxhpc and setting the parameters to
9600,8,n,1 with no flow control would be to enter;

AT

ATZ

ATDT number_to_dial

There is a possibility that software has locked the modem into a fax
mode, but the above should give you some concrete info including on
screen result messages.

WOW thanks Beverly I was just contemplating throwing the modem into the bin.
I tried the vxHCP program you mentioned and it worked, it now dials out AND
most importantly I can now connect to the internet. All I have to do now is
get it to automatically dial in with the commands you mentioned.

Thanks for your help!!!!

Homework time... ;-)

go back to http://bevhoward.com/PPCDun.htm and reread my rambling
dissertation until you have an understanding of what the os is doing
when dialing... once understood, setting up a connection is then pretty
simple.

Note, in particular, the ability to "spot" on screen the actual number
that will be dialed during a connect session... this will normally
explain what's happening... i.e. being dialed as a longdistance number
in the wrong area code, etc.

Glad I saved the modem ;-)

You saved the modem and my wallet, I was negotiating for a replacement when
your post arrived, all that would have happened is my wallet would get
lighter and the problem would have still been there. Thanks again

Do you have a Wireless ISP Subscription set up - like AT&T or Earthlink or
T-Mobile and so on ? If you are using the connection for direct dial up to
your Home ISP Computer - like AOL or MSN.com and so on - you should check
for access possible from Remote Computer which your Mobile PC would be....
or sort of accessing your Home PC Email from a wireless Laptop. There may be
settings while you are logged on to the Internet at your ISP Homepage on
Home PC that you must enable for remote access. For instance, on MSN.com
Version 8 you had to click Mobile on the homepage and then click "Allow
Remote Access" to retreive email from the MSN.com Email Account to your PDA.
I understand you are talking about at this point even just getting "Online"
wirelessly, set aside these other features.

If you have a Wireless ISP your using your 56K Modem with - there may be
additional Internet Settings for access that are neccessary. There may even
be a special dial up number to use for PDA. You should call for any Special
Settings indicated by your Wireless ISP. I would think most likely there are
additional wireless Internet Settings you have to type in from your ISP at
like "Step 6 and Step 8" from the website you gave.

It may be that the 56K Modem you have (access wireless internet anywhere on
any phone line - plugged into Modem) requires an independent Wireless ISP
Subscription like Go.com or something. They usually will not advertise this
because if some people knew there was an additional $30 to $40 Wireless ISP
Subscription necessary to use it - they would not buy it. Kind of deceitful,
and happens.
