I have not built my own PC in years... in fact I think the last PC I built was a Pentium-1. I've been buying commercial PCs since then. Now... I have a NICE bonus from work coming and have committed to myself that I no longer want to wait for 8 hours while my DVD's compress. I no longer want to live with measly 60 fps in my favorite games. I want to be near the top of the PCMark05 list! So... with all that said I have $10k. I am leaning towards dual socket quad core Xeon's...

But... I am not stuck on anything. So - professionals... let's have it... $10k budget - what would you get?

well ..

Sounds like BS to me, besides AgenaFX will bone that system for 1/4 the price. Get a big Dell FP 24" or larger and a laptop to go mobile. WinAVI converts AVIs to VOBs like a dream. I could fit 6 hours of Andromeda, 8 episodes, to one DVDR at above vhs quality. Don't transcode DVDs it's a joke .. buy DL-DVDRs and do a direct copy with AnyDVD.

Such a Bullshit post... Wow.. 4 - 150GB WD Raptor

Then MITSUMI, Black Internal 1.44MB 3.5" Floppy Drive

WHO THE "F" still use floppy's?

You guys spent all your time writing your own dream machines. 8O

If he got a bonus check of 40k. Why the hell would he even bother?

Think about it. Who the hell gets a 40k bonus check and spends it on new furniture and A computer.

He would already have one given to him.

Delivery to his momma's basement!!

Is there any software around that will actually use all them cores or are most of them going to be lying idle?

More Information

There's lots of software that will utilize multiple cores, especially rendering, CAD, and video editing software. Even Oblivion can take advantage of plural processors, and because of the popularity of dual+ core lately, much more is sure to be on the way.

Beyond that, mutitasking speaks for itself. There's a reason multi-core has become so popular in such a hurry. And, of course, its so cool.

1st - I do have a computer from work - but it is not as good as the one I want.

2nd - This is not a BS post. The product is on order and is paid for and will be in shortly - so I will post pictures.

3rd - Why are you all so sensitive to a 56k modem and a floppy drive? Generally nobody uses floppies - I get it, but sometimes its just easy to throw a driver or what not on one to move it over, or to grab an old PC game off of the old system. The modem is so I can get faxes because sometimes I need to do that from home.

4th - What else would one buy with their bonus? I'm putting a bunch away, I have 3 cars and a house and investments - curious to know what you guys think I should be buying?

More Information

Id love to have your bonus, maybe one day I will. I would use it to fund my business idea, and turn it into 20k. That said, the amount of money were talking here is probably far more important to me; I couldnt afford to build the rig you are going to.

So, no, I dont think you should be doing anything else. Unless you have a mistress. Or want one.

Enjoy!

Can't wait to see pics.

And don't even bother asking the "what to do with the money otherwise?" question......as useless as condoms in a Tibetan monastery ;)

Your money, your life, your choice. I'm sure PLENTY of guys here have blown $hundreds on booze.....I consider that a waste.....but I blow money on computers and I'm sure my mom considers that a waste.

Different strokes for different folks. Though.......I suppose it wouldn't hurt to donate a very small portion of that bonus to.....say......a kid that doesn't have a computer and could use one for school......or some DVDs and a TV for a local learning center for kids with disabilities. Perhaps if you use some of that extra and put it together with your technical savvy, you could spread a very small portion of that extra and bring some joy to those who would truly benefit from your help?

Just my opinion though, but consider it on its own merit.

Yeah, right...

Can't believe no-one has posted about AMD QuadFX.

You wait until June (probably...), then get two Barcelona Native Quad-Cores on a QuadFX board. Then you have EIGHT CORES, and SLi or Cross-Fire capability. By which time the x2900 (R600) series GPU will be out, Nvida will counter with 8800Ultra, prices hit the waterfall...

Seriously, two months is not too long to wait for the true next-generation parts...

Proof, not only do you double post, but you double post to overstate the obvious. Anyone that can read can see you have 4 Raptors. Look at your sig.

You gonna post again to say you got Dominator and he should buy that?

And then post again to say he should get a GTX?

And then again to say go SLI?

And so on and so on?

No offense, but try to make your posts have a POINT. If you wanna give pointless information, try typing it in Word and then send it to the printer, not here ;)
