Win2K
SP4

It's been a while since on of my boxes has recieved any updates of any kind
so apparently I need to first upgrade the Update software. I was attempting
to install this software and it kept blowing up. I have two messages in the
Event Viewer:

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with
error 0x8007f004: Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773).

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with
error 0x8007f004: Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1.

I see a few things regarding these messages in KB, but nothing really in
regards to while installing this software. I was thinking of perhaps
installing these guys on they're own and not in part of the total software
package update as indicated in this KB:

http://support.microsoft.com/defau [...] -us;842773

but wanted to get some opinions on this before I do it. Also the KB doesn't
mention if a reboot is required or not?

Alternatively, does anyone know what may have caused this or what other
choices there are to fix it?

TIA, ChrisR

Hi,

Error 0x8007F004 is:

STATUS_INSUFFICIENT_PRIVS
You do not have permission to update.

Please see if this helps:

1. Start Explorer.
2. In Explorer, right click on "My Computer"
3. Select "Manage"
4. Expand Local Users and Groups.
5. Select Users.
6. Open the account used to access Windows Update.
7. Click the Member Of tab.
8. If you find anything else than the "Administrators" group there,
remove those other entries. You need to have only the
"Administrators" group listed there.
9. If you did any changes to the Member of list, log off and on again,
and try Windows Update again.

Do you have "Client for Microsoft Networks" installed/enabled for your
network connection? If not, install it and see if it helps.
