I have heard these same rumors although I've seen nothing official on it.

The term "Pocket PC" has been shifting to "Windows Mobile" for some time
now. It will obviously just continue although the term "Pocket PC" will be
in our vernacular for some time.

Lastly, I co-own HPC:Factor (http://www.hpcfactor.com), a site dedicated to
the Handheld PC platform. This platform, as you may know, is virtually gone
from an OEM perspective. We won't be changing our name anytime soon with
the millions of hits we get a week. Like the naming convention, websites
with Pocket PC or Smartphone are safe for many years to come.

I thought that "Windows Mobile" is now the general branding for the OS, and
that "Pocket PC" and "Smartphone" are terms that now only refer to the
hardware. Looks like MS Portable Media Centre is classed as a Windows Mobile
device too:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmo [...] mpare.mspx

Most people I work with seem to use Pocket PC 2003 and Windows Mobile 2003
interchangeably.

hey! I am not talking about some THEORETICAL considerations, but I am
talking practical:
Windows Mobile 2005 (aka magneto) is one platform that can run both
smarpthone2003 and pocket pc 2003 applications!!!
both in pocket pc devices and in smarpthones powered by it!

I've only read that the PocketPC version of Windows Mobile 2005 will run
both PocketPC and Smartphone applications. Smartphones are not able to run
full fledged PocketPC apps.

Tell me, how would you expect to use a program that is controlled through a
touch screen to be used on a smartphone?

through pointer and cursor, and since upcoming smarpthones will have
resolutions 320x240 - the same as current Pocket PCs, then it should not be
a problem.
