I was wondering it makes a difference if i'm using the Logitech Z5450 (the one with dual wireless rear's) with an onboard sound card. I am using the sound card on my Asus P5W2E-d Premium (or something liek that).

Would it make much difference if I went and bought say a, SB X-FI XTREME MUSIC??

Or would It be basically no difference from the onboard sound that I am using?

Thanks in advanced for your help

Unless you have a new nvidia motherboard like a 570, 590, or 680i, you will have much better sound from a X-Fi card.

Thanks for the help...

Any 2nd opinions by anyone else?
BTW I'm on a budget, money is tight and I only want to do this if I can really notice a difference.

Will this also maybe help from my computer locking up??. It always locks up (freeze for like 15 seconds) and makes this messed up sound. Maybe if i free up the mobo resources It will help? (onboard sound/video)

Unless you have Audiophille speakers and test equipment I think you will be hard pressed to hear much of a difference between the 2 setups. The only real advantage of add on sound cards is to take some of the sound processing duties off of the CPU and onto the dedicated processor on the Sound Card which will give you a couple for FPS in games. The other thing about the X-Fi cards is the added audio processing stuff for sound effects. Just note that if you are going to go with VISTA in the near future then all the additional sound effects from the Creative cards won't work under VISTA. Unless something dramatic has changed in the last week or so.

Depends on the onboard sound, some have problems with high distortion, some are crystal clear. If you haven't noticed any problems yet, then I don't see an obvious gain, but if you hear distortion issues, then obviously its time to upgrade. It's hard not to sound like I'm just giving "common sense" advice, but the question is too vague for any better response.

LOL very true, plus Sound is very subjective. What sounds good to me might not sound good to Mark Jo Henry Bob down the street. Some people are better at picking out distortion then others as well. Way too many factors to give a concrete answer

I can tell you right now, that unless you really really care about how your music sounds, then as long as the onboard sound has the right outputs the difference will be negligible, and if your on a budget, then don't even bother, put the money into a bigger hard drive. You can never have enough eh?

You could never have enough HD space!!

Dunno about couple of FPS but my fps went up by an avg of 20 in FEAR and WOW. Just by upgrading from onboard to x-fi

Nice increase. I can see that in FEAR. Very very graphic and sound intensive! I sure do like playing FEAR.

Absolutely, You are buying some good kick Ass speakers! go for a dedicated sound card!

You can get the X-Fi extreme for $100 in newegg and lower versions for less. I really recommend it. I have 5.1 setup (logitech z-640) in my house and I use the Audigy 2 ZS because the onboard audio was sucky and Im really happy I bought the sound card.

That does sound a little exaggerated. How many frames does WoW even have normally?..LOL..I can understand maybe fear. If you have poor components it will take some stress off your motherboard with the added sound card, but 20 FPS!?!?

Thanks for your help guys, yeah i think this is a hard subject to give advice on, Sound is tricky. I'll use the info to try and make an informed decision.

More realistically, depending on the game you may see an 2-5fps increase at most. Games like Battlefield 2 uses EAX 2.0 which is a complicated algorithm but to be honest, don't buy a sound card to increase framerates, the money would be far better spent elsewhere. If you want the best sound quality, and have a good set of speakers as well, then go for it.

What the Hell are you talking about?

My upgrade path over the years has been onboard, SB Live, SB2 Audigy ZS, and X-Fi Platinum. Each time, I've heard a very measurable noticeable increase in audio quality. Right now, I'm using the Z-5450s with the X-Fi Platinum, and everything sounds crisp, beautiful, and full.

in XP or Vista?

Since you have the rear wireless speakers even with a new sound card it wont be the best it can be. I have the logitech z5500 and I use onboard sound card and it sounds great. I also hook my ipod directly into it and its great. I tend to listen to alot of music and I would have prefered the z5450 but they didnt have the greatest reviews with gamers since the rear speakers are wireless.

I never said I had those speakers. I have a 5.1 setup which is the Z-640 (kinda old) but still works great. I also have the Audigy 2 ZS

Onboard audio tends to have a lower SNR. This is more apparent at higher volumes (I assume you buy a 200$+ surround sound system so you can actually turn up the volume sometimes). You'll hear plenty of crackling and hissing.
This is generally even more apparent when you try to use your onboard sound in 5.1 surround (or more channels) mode. If you're buying quality speakers, I'd recommend at least a 40$ Audigy 2/4 along with it.
I personally dont feel that the Xi-Fi is worthy of it's price tag if you mainly use it to listen to mp3s and game, but others will disagree.

Thats true, getting speakers with no sound card is not worth it (and viceversa)

I bought my Audigy 2ZS at $100 when it was one of the top models like 2 years ago. And my speakers were $80, I didnt want high-end speakers cuz I didnt feel like I needed to spent more than $100 on them.

What I can tell you is that my sound card upgrade time wont be soon neither for my speakers
