Again, learn to save kid. Quit being such a spoiled brat of the 90's.

Come off your high horse! People all don't fit into the analytical box you want them to fit in.

We all get excited over purchasing new systems, and if you have lost that, then I'm sorry for you.

Extreme wisdom is sometimes sacrificed for enjoyment. (i.e. It is not wise to hang off a mountain dangling by a rope, but poeple do it, because it's enjoyable.)

There should be excitement over creating your dream system. 6 months is not going to make a life/death decision in the computer industry. Look at the company road maps. You can see where they are going.

CPU, Motherboard, GPU - yeah those will change rapidly- but a case??? Please!!! Powersupply???? what's going to change - save 10$. Oooh!!!! that's worth calling someone a spoiled moron. Sound card??? Nothing new in the next 6 months. Case fan????? $.50

Leave him a lone and let him enjoy the experience.

parge,
it looks like you are the only one that think your way,
you are completely ignorant to other people, that's not a forum attitude,
you're 21 years old, and acting like you know everything and the you are the center of world.
learn respect, thanks.

He asked a simple question and you jump on him for something he never asked.

He asked "what doesn't go obselete," not whether or not he should purchase all at once!! He was pretty clear on his plans to do it over a period of time. 6months!!!

Answer his question and leave him alone. He is being brow beaten about things he never sought advice on.

Why do people assume things??? Try married!!!!!! Obviously you are single.

Yep. Single, jobless, short, fat, bald, ugly, childless, bastard child, gay, black, zit-faced, retarded and inhuman. You have me pegged. Now grow up already.

So let me get this straight, I provide good advice, reasons why it's good,
I apologize for a misunderstanding, and now you...someone who has little say in any of it is defending him when he's not even being attacked by me...

You just opened up a whole new book on why they should delete your account and ban you from Toms.

Thanks for the advice, but I would rather not have it if its loaded with belittlement.

Latecomer to this thread. So ...

From the first page: "I Have More Memory In My Videocard That You Have In Your Entire System". With the new 8800 videocards, that is not surprising. I would guess that 512 MB is about average for all the XP boxes out there.

Media readers: I have a Yamaha QY-100 MIDI sequencer that uses (shudder!) smartmedia for extra data storage.

Floppy drives: I picked up a USB external drive for my laptop two years ago. I use it just often enough to be glad I have it.

I tend to wait until I have to upgrade. Current box has an Athlon XP2400, 512 MB RAM, and a 5700 video card in it. (Halo and Farcry are ... playable.) Then I get all the parts for a new box at once.

This time, with all the changes in components, I would have liked to wait another couple of months. But I am home on vacation now from Saudi Arabia, where the newest parts are unavailable and newer parts are very expensive.

I favor waiting and saving then buying at once - with one exception. Watch for sales on things like cases and power supplies.

New box: E6600, eVGA 680i, eVGA 8800 GTS

You called him spoiled and ignorant. That's not just giving him good advice. That is belittling him so that he will listen to you.

Last I checked you don't have the authority to delete accounts. . . there's a good reason for that too.

That'll wake ya up in tha mornin', Boy!

I know I'm probably preachin to the choir here, but I'll go ahead and state the obvious anyways....

I see exactly what has been transpiring here. Parge never asked for advice on the intelligence of his decisions, he only asked advice as to what he COULD purchase now that won't be 100% obsolete by the time he finishes his build.

Next pipes in someone who obviously has major issues outside of the forum and comes here to vent their frustration onto others who do not deserve it.

The problem here, is such people should just be ignored when they are causing such problems. If you respond to them, wether it is meant with good intention or not, they will just continue their onslaught. If you ignore them, they might go away.

I can also already feel the comming flame for making these comments. Soo, be my guest and fire away.

On a better note, to answer Parge's origional question... things I would purchase now, and wait to purchase the remainder:

Monitor
Case
Power Supply
Hard Drive(s)
Optical Drive(s)
Sound Card
Keyboard/Mouse
Speakers
Floppy Drive (if you want this)
Case Fans

Things to buy later:
Motherboard
CPU
Video Card
Cooling Systems (CPU, Chipset, Video Card coolers)

Harddrives
RAID card (if you are going that direction)

Sound card
Optical drives

Keyboard

I would say motherboard, but I would wait until you see what chipsets come out in response to all the new Quad processors.

6 months ago I would have said graphics card, but we're in an awward graphics strage with DX10 in our view.

Good list to go by...definitely do not buy the mobo, memory, proc, gpu, or monitor until you can see what's available at the time you are actually ready to make the purchase.

From experience. It is very frustrating staring at an empty case and power supply for three months.

Word! I've tortured myself like that, it sucked...

I'm married and spend money in chunks because the wife doesn't approve of a $1500 purchase all at once. The only reason I could buy all the parts for my new build at once is because I have a 12 month no interest credit card where we can pay it off in chunks.

Your marriage financial issues are not my concern. If you work hard, pay the bills, and save up on the side you're entitled to spend it how you want. Tell your woman to back off a little maybe. Sounds like she's wearing the pants. As for the rest of you...if you can't handle a bit of blunt reality, don't go online. There are far harsher people on these forums than yours truly. Parge, you sound a little sensitive, and these people will side with anyone. Need a tissue?

Camaro, are you still talking? I'm sorry but I really haven't heard much you've had to say as so much of it lacks any thought. You're just picking a fight by siding up with your fallen hero.

Shodar, buying any of that crap is idiotic. You're a fool. Quit talking. All those parts you listed will go down in price significantly in a mere 6 months, he save $400. Besides, optical drive? Come on man. HD-DVD drives will be out within 6 months, and fairly affordable I'd imagine. You can't buy case fans without a case, and who knows what the case manufacturers will offer by then. Wouldn't you rather be able to pick from new cases as well as the old ones? The old ones will get cheaper with new releases. PSU? You don't buy a PSU before you figure out your power requirements. You guys seem to be complete newbs...with no knowledge of building computers. Better just go to your local Best Buy and pick up a Compaq.

One last note, as far as looking for sales...there will always be sales.
