I posted this in the games section, but thought I might have more luck here.

Ok, I have the first Counterstrike and am trying to get to where I can play online with Steam. I donwloaded steam, installed Counterstrike, updated CS, and when I go to play, my screen shows nothing but colors everywhere, but I can see the menu. I can see the servers, and when I click on them to join, I go to the screens where it says downloading resources and after I get them, CS closes by itself when its just about to let me play.

How can I get it to run?

Hmm try deleting the clientregistry.blob file in the main steam folder first. That normally sorts out a load of problems.

If that doesnt work, It might have something to do with your web browser. There was an issue using IE7, which steam apparantly fixed, so maybe try downgrading from 7 to 6 if you still have problems.

I am assuming you installed CS from it's own disk?? If so, does it show up in Steam? The best advice I can think to give is uninstall CS but not steam. Open Steam and if you go to the Games drop down menu, click activate product. It will ask for your cd key, and once that is in let you DL the game thru Steam. Should work that way.

Did you install it using a disc and cd-key?

because if you use steam, all you have to do is go to games>games>my games then install counterstrike and you should be good to go. BTW, I re installed steam today, so it shouldnt be a problem for you to do the same. In 20 minutes, I was up and running again

I did install CS from CD, then put the cd code into steam. After that I commence the download of CS from Steam and once it finished, I launched it and that is where the problems arose.

I did install CS from Steam, do I need to install all the other games that I can play?

Why am I getting all these messages that say the Steam Servers are too busy to handle my request? They were busy when I re-entered the product key after I re-installed Steam and CS.

There is something wrong here.

Follow my instructions:

1) Go to the main steam folder (default is C:\Program Files\Steam)

2) if you sort the files by name, look under 'C' for ClientRegistry.blob or just press search within the folder and type in clientregistry.

3) Delete the ClientRegistry.blob file.

4) Restart Steam. You should get a small update then be able to load your games.

If that doesnt sort you out, browse the steam forums/support at http://www.steampowered.com for browser issues.

A bad storm rolled through Seattle Friday, and Valve apparently has all their servers there with no off site backups for when they lose power. Should be ok now.

It doesnt matter now, Steam wont let me re-use my product keys because they say its invalid, even under the same account. That was after I re-installed Steam. So, this sucks.

If Steam recognizes you as owning the game then you shouldn't need to re enter the key. If it doesn't show up in Steam as available to download or already installed then you will have to talk to Valve about getting that straightened out. Could be that their servers aren't fully functional after the storm problems Friday.

If a reinstall of the game doesn't work and deleting the .blob file didn't work, then I don't have any other ideas but using the Steam forums to get help.

I guess this is a silly question as the game is a bit old now, but you are on a computer that is up to spec to play the game right??

Ya, more than enough. Its my first build and plays Half Life Single player with no laggs, full video.
