I have an IMAP server running on my home network. It's used to provide
an e-mail feed both locally from machines on the LAN and remotely across
the Internet, usually from a Pocket PC. Due to licensing limitations I'm
only permitted one connection at a time to the server, but this isn't
usually a problem because I only ever use one PC at a time and obviously
no PCs are connecting when I'm mobile with the PPC.

But whenever the PPC in placed a cradle attached to any LAN machine, or
if it is ActiveSynced via Bluetooth with a connected machine, the
Messaging application sees the connection and uses it to open an IMAP
session with the server which it then keeps open until it's manually
closed. I've lost count of the number of times I've been refused a
connection to the server from a PC and have had to hunt down the errant
PPC so I can disconnect it from the IMAP.

Is there any way of preventing the Messaging application from doing
this? I've considered setting up a second, dummy e-mail account on the
Pocket PC and setting it as default so the IMAP isn't accessed but I
feel there must be a more elegant solution.

Create another email account in the PPC and leave the Messaging application
looking at this account when you connect to the craddle. It can be a dummy
account. Or just point it to Outlook email.

wouldnt just setting the inbox on the PPC to the "activesync" account do the
same thing, without having to create a dummy account?

I think this is the same as Helio Diamant's suggestion -- leave it
pointing at Outlook e-mail, which is what I've now done. This isn't bad
as an interim solution because I don't use Outlook for normal e-mail so
the account is always empty.

What's still a bit of a pain is that Pocket Messaging doesn't seem to
have a 'default' account in the traditional sense of the word, it just
remembers the last account to be accessed. So I have to remember when
I've finished reading e-mail remotely to switch to the Outlook account.

Just one of those little annoyances, I guess. I love the machine to bits
(I only bought it as a convenient way for my better half to show digital
photos around and now I can't function without it) but the operating
system and built-in applications have some very strange quirks.

This is what I meant by pointing it to "Outlook Email" (which is the new
name of Activesync account in Second Edition)
