I'm thinking of upgrading my already obsolete but at the same time trying to salvage most of the old part...my spec is as below:

Gigabyte GA-81PE1000-G
Intel Pentium 4 FSB 400MHz S478
2 X 256MB DDR400 Kingston Value RAM
1 x 256MB DDR266 Samsung RAM
Winfast nVidia A7600 GT
Stock 450W PSU
Sony DVD-RW

my idea is to upgrade the motherboard with MSI MS7097 i865PE NEO3-V and the processor with Pentium 4 531 3.0 GHz FSB 800MHz...the graphic card is still new, so i'm searching for a motherboard thas has an agp slot and also the slot for DDR1...that way i can save alot...

actually i'm trying to play the Elder Scroll 4: oblivion...the current system i have only yield in average 10 FPS when outdoor...even when the graphic detail are very low...so i figure out it is something other than the graphic card...it must be bcoz of the processor rite? opinion anyone?

Completely agree with yas here.. Too old to possibly upgrade with any substantial gain for investment. :( Sorry dood.

As stated, the upgrade path is not really worth considering here. You can put together a budget C2D system for less than £500 (say $700).

well...i forgot about the currency, the upgrade cost me around USD 151 with the motherboard plus processor...the cost to buy a new one is about USD 1000...which rite now i cant afford...if i upgrade the processor and the motherboard, will the performance change slightly or greatly? if it's only slightly, then i wont be able to play oblivion and i can save my money...

hmm, how much money can you afford to spend because you could get an athlon system and keep the ram and gfx card.

If you want to upgrade you current system i would suggest getting another stick of ram to take the pressure of your hdd and reduce hitching.

As for playing oblivion smoothly you will need atleast a 7950GT 512MB PCI-E
Video Card,Core 2 Duo E6300 CPU,ABIT AB9 Mobo,Cosair 2x2GB PC5300 DDR Value select RAM and a SATA2 Hard Drive !

You could leave you currant system and buy a new one, because unless you get some more ram and a better AGP video card your current system you have no hope of getting decent frames with your computer, sorry.

:Edit: If you don't belive your video card and RAM and take oblivion let me tell you.

My old video card (when it was working fine) was a Inno3D 7900GT 256MB @ stock and it got 8FPS(in the dense forest) and 22FPS (in a village) using Max settings no AA at 1280x1024 res

So your 7600GT has no hope in hell in getting better frames !

wow...that's gonna cost me alot...especially in my kind of country...the pc fair coming out today, so i think most of the price gonna drop a bit...

what about in just high quality or even medium? as long as it is playable (in terms of fps 20 and above) and not too ugly...i try running oblivion in very low quality...and yuck, very ugly, yet very low FPS (very low quality FPS compared to high quality FPS is almost the same), so maybe it wasnt bcoz of my graphic card... i remember my friend has a quite decent system, however still has some problem in running the game in ultra high when fighting too many AI...

I had Oblivion running in my laptop (when it's still brand new and hdd is quite empty)...the specs are:

ACER ASPIRE 5672WLMi
Intel Core Duo (Centrino Duo?) 1.66GHz FSB 667MHz
Ati Mobility Radeon X1600 256MB Hyper Memory
100GB 5400RPM Sata Hdd
512 DDR2 RAM

well that i've got from the sticker...oblivion running quite smoothly in medium-high quality (auto detect high, but i lowered some a bit)...FPS is above 25...although frequent area loading...the graphics is still nice, but cannot be compared to ultra high though...that one is ultra nice...

so i was thinking, if i can upgrade my system a little bit above my laptop specs, maybe just maybe i can run oblivion smoothly in medium-high...my budget now is very tight, i've got less than USD 270 to spend (student's life)...unless i keep saving some money, i'll wait for the next cycle upgrade...
